We need to talk about chest binders

Does any one have the factual information we can put in one place as a resource?
My own personal view is that if a badly fitting bra is bad for developing breast tissue god knows what a breast binder would do. It also reaks of foot binding and women mutilating themselves for a certain body image.... I would be interested to see any links to medical research breast tissue and binders .

There might be useful resources here: www.transgendertrend.com/social-transition-and-chest-binding/

Interestingly, a search on google images for 'damage caused by breast binders' shows lots of positive images of happy girls wearing corset-like devices on their breasts.

After reading the gymnastics thread, I was wondering how a child identifying as male, wearing a 'binder' and this not being 'drawn attention' to works in real life. and doing male strength based exercises.

Surely they are clearly visible under gym wear, and will affect breathing Confused Not very male. I am not seeing why, when you read about FtM transgender lives, that the first thought seems to be breast binding. It makes no sense to me.

Yes, it's all a bit 'thou shall bind thy chest'.

A good idea.

I was on that thread yesterday about binders and there were some outlandish claims that they are not a 'bad' thing for children.

Even if people couldn't grasp the concept that asking young girls to bind their breasts because society has trained them to hate their bodies, is wrong, then surely the physical effects of binding would cause food for thought?

StunninBravepen · 15/09/2018 23:11

What i really want is if anyone can find any medical research on them?

Why would anyone want a breast binder? Sounds gross.

I'm posting a link to one clinical paper - in the righthand margin you'll find links to similar papers in that clinical database.

Health impact of chest binding among transgender adults: a community-engaged, cross-sectional study.

preview.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27300085

The full paper is here: transfigurations.org.uk/filestore/binding-project-postprint.pdf

You can use your own search terms to explore the clinical databases or to tinker with the scholar.google.co.uk search I've tried here:

scholar.google.co.uk/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C5&q=chest+binding+transgender&btnG=

That thread made me so sad. The fact people where so laissez-faire when talking about children makes we wonder if people are aware of the reality of the path that these children are treading on.
