Bill to stamp out 'online echo chambers of hate'

Good to see someone taking a stand against the spread of online hate. I wonder which sites might fall foul of such a bill.

Red: Or are we proposing we just go full on Russia or China here?

The powers that be could just replace Facebook with Weibo. Job done. They could even include the handy algorithms which enable you to build "social capital" by liking and retweeting the stuff the government tells you that you should like.

WrongKindOfFace · 10/09/2018 20:36

Blimey, South Yorks police can’t be super busy right now:

In addition to reporting hate crime, please report non-crime hate incidents, which can include things like offensive or insulting comments, online, in person or in writing. Hate will not be tolerated in South Yorkshire. Report it and put a stop to it

You know that time when I was 12 and Jamie in my class told me my arse was big enough to cause an eclipse? Please ensure he is suitably reprimanded.

WrongKindOfFace · 10/09/2018 20:38

The comments section is gold. I do not hate it and have not reported it.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 10/09/2018 20:41

It's an authoritarian's wet dream.

WrongKindOfFace · 10/09/2018 20:43

Oh look, they even have a handy online form where you can report that time your brother called you a knob. What about fraud? Can you fill in an online form for that time your dad nicked money out of the monopoly bank?

MN has already been mentioned as a place to be closed down... (The Momentum_Surbiton account is a wonderful spoof account, BTW)

arranfan · 10/09/2018 20:46

Is it just me who can't see the G1rl From Mars tweets?

FermatsTheorem · 10/09/2018 20:50

I like the reply from "MomentumSurbiton" (someone of my generation who grew up watching "The Good Life"?) "Agree entirely! Mumsnet is dangerous and subversive. It doesn't give the love to male-bodied women with penises and talks about breast feeding and vaginal birthing. Very trans exclusionary. Disgusting. Ban it then delete it" Grin

Piss off Lucy Powell

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 10/09/2018 20:51

I’m expecting an internet version of The Cook Report where people have some middle aged dude bashing on their door shouting “WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE ALLEGATIONS THAT YOU MET ONLINE WITH PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANT WOMEN TO SHARE PRISON CELLS WITH RAPISTS?”

FermatsTheorem · 10/09/2018 20:55

arranfan open a private browser and copy and paste it in - you should be able to see it then.

arranfan · 10/09/2018 21:03

I had to change browsers! Much faffing later, I can see it. Hmm

What larks, Pip.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE ALLEGATIONS THAT YOU MET ONLINE WITH PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANT WOMEN TO SHARE PRISON CELLS WITH RAPISTS?”

What are we to think of women who automatically engaged their critical thinking to recognise an urban myth when they saw that report about razor-accessorised stickers? To the ducking-stools. How else could they have known?

bd67th · 10/09/2018 21:23

The authoritarian left are as bad as, if not worse than, the authoritarian right.

Anlaf · 10/09/2018 21:24

That girl from mars account had also shared this. I'm afraid I laffed:

LGBTQ+ Goldsmiths
@lgbtqgold
Long story short, friends, the ideas of TERFs and anti trans bigots literally kill and must be eradicated through reeducation. Science must be decolonised and de-essentialised in order for this to happen. #noterfsonourterf

If you peer at this for long enough, you could think reeducation might mean #debate? Won't hold me breath though.

Anlaf · 10/09/2018 21:28

Anyway, this Bill sounds like a terrible idea.

Didn't the security services used to infiltrate dodgy groups in the olden days? Assume they shd just do the same now, but with memes. and presumably witty posts on fabled hatesite FWR

arranfan · 10/09/2018 21:29

My DH read this over my shoulder and said, "ideas literally kill " in a baffled sort of way.

I gave him a Paddington Hard Stare and reminded him that I shoot my ideas out through my laser beam eyes. When I shoot, I shoot to upskill tho'....

Re-education...

Off to the feminist gulag with us all...

silentcrow · 10/09/2018 21:31

So basically they want to close the internet?

Nah. Follow the money, yet again. I am willing to bet you'll find some lobbyist somewhere proposing this as a precursor to the loss of net neutrality. It'll be "Ok, you want to access these sites? You gotta pay extra." en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Net_neutrality

Not that I'm a cynic or anything. Hmm

Yes actually a quick look at wikipedia shows it's not often promising:

Re-education may refer to:

A euphemism for brainwashing, efforts aimed at instilling certain beliefs in people against their will
Reeducation camp, the name given to the prison camps operated by the government of Vietnam following the end of the Vietnam War
Re-education through labor, the name given to a system of administrative detentions in the People's Republic of China
Reeducation camps (Kyohwaso in Korean), the name given to prison labor camps in North Korea
Rehabilitation (penology)
Physical therapy
Adult education, education for adults
"Re-Education (Through Labor)", a single by punk rock band Rise Against from their 2008 album Appeal to Reason

I wonder which LGBT+++Q Goldsmiths has in mind?

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 10/09/2018 21:40

Curtailing free speech in private groups is worrying to me.
I get the idea with what are being referred to as hate groups but who makes the definition.
Also any groups that are really up to something sinister will just create groups in new places online until they get closed down.
The internet isn’t being policed properly now, I don’t see how they can give this anything more than lip service in real life.
I also would have thought that any government/police agency was more than capable of hacking any account tbh.

OlennasWimple · 10/09/2018 21:40

Off to the feminist gulag with us all..

The Colonies, you mean?

Materialist - whenever I read the comments below an article about trans issues in papers like the DM, I'm always struck by how many people conflate the issues and seem to think that it's all the fault of The Feminists

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 10/09/2018 21:41

Plus we already have laws relating to acceptable free speech.
