Recommended fiction books that deviate from the romantic script

I enjoy a good romance novel especially since going off gory crime fiction like James Patterson when pregnant. I love romantic thrillers where it's more thriller than romance but am sick of the same old tired script and predictable getting together of the two main characters. I'll admit that sometimes there's comfort in the predictable but I'm wanting something different. Something fun, intelligent, witty and engaging without being pretentious, stereotypical or hard work.
Can anyone recommend anything please?

You could try Susan Hill's The Various Haunts of Men, which is detective fiction but messes with genre boundaries.

I love (x100) AS Byatt's Possession, which is subtitled 'A Romance' but is so much more than that. She wrote it deliberately to be a likeable read and it is wonderful.

Some people I have recommended Possesion to have found it hard work but it is worth it.

Thank you.
As I'm new to feminism I should probably read some classic texts too so feel free to recommend.
