PM Scott Morrison is an awful human being. His stance is not based on any concern for women or children, but in extremely conservative religious values.

It seems that the Australian medical fraternity is taking a softly, softly approach.

I'm fascinated that people seem incapable of drawing the lines between the increasing narrowness of acceptable gender roles, especially for girls, and an increase in girls presenting as trans-questioning, at the least.

So little attention is paid to female distress as a function of social organisation, you'd think women didn't exist at all.

Girls wanting to be boys is actually an understandable indication of how fucking hard it is to be a teenage girl. Medicalising that anxiety benefits the "experts" and drug companies, while managing to completely ignore the fundamental problem. Instead of treating this distress as a symptom of the toxicity of the patriarchy, we hold out a false escape route based on hormones and major surgery.

Moreover, social contagion is clearly a thing: we only have to look at social fads like the ice-bucket challenge or fidget spinners to recognise this.

Scott Morrison is an awful human being

He is and everyone agrees. It’s not like anyone wanted him to be PM. He’ll be out in 5 mins and the next lot will set about undoing everything he did.

Link, sorry. I hope Morrison will be gone soon, but I have little confidence that women will be on the agenda for an opposition government.

My heart breaks for girls who believe they're wrong, when the reality is they're trapped in a society which despises them.

New research confirms millennial men are leading a backlash against women’s rights

"The depressing news from our survey is that Australia appears to be following the trend. Not only did the Australian Liberal Party fail to replace its outgoing leader and Prime Minister with a politician perceived by many to be the most qualified and popular person for the job, Julie Bishop, but a growing number of Millennial and Gen X men appear to be alienated from the process of change and are backsliding into traditional value systems. This is all the more worrying when we can also find significant evidence of high levels of knowledge and understanding about the nature of gender inequality in Australia."

AUSTRALIA'S only sex-change clinic has been temporarily shut down and its controversial director forced to quit amid growing claims that patients with psychiatric problems have been wrongly diagnosed as transsexuals and encouraged to have radical gender reassignment surgery.

Interesting article, Dance, thanks for posting.(Have just googled Emma Goldman!)

exexpat · 05/09/2018 17:33

The sex-change clinic article is from nine years ago. I very much doubt that an article like that (and the linked one going into more detail about the the people suing and detransitioning) would get published now.

Oh yes - didn't notice that. Yes nearly a decade on we are living on a different planet!
