Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Who's going to the WEP Conference this weekend? Fancy a thread?

I'm the only person I know going. I would be interested to get others MNers thoughts on the conference and the agenda as it happens.

And of course the emergency debate.

Sounds like some great speeches though.

RhymesWithOrange · 07/09/2018 21:45

It's all very good. Eloquent, passionate women, many unaccustomed to public speaking, but getting up and doing it anyway. If the trans thing wasn't a thing I'd be very in love with this party.

I'll do five more speakers before ducking out (sorry, I'm knackered!)

Rape - particularly acquaintance rape, women not reporting or being believed

Teenage girls getting dick pics from their peers, and how to get more women into grassroots politics

"Total feminism", smashing pre determined roles based on sex (candidate for party position)

Equal parenting and care giving (another candidate for party position)

No fault divorce and gender pay gap

It's emptying out a bit now so I'm going to duck out. Back at 9am tomorrow.

They’re cramming a lot in Smile how do they cover so many subjects so quickly?

LizzieSiddal · 07/09/2018 22:18

Don’t blame you Rhymes.

RhymesWithOrange · 07/09/2018 22:25

Fairly strict 3 minute time limit for each speaker. But it's amazing what you can cover in 3 minutes!

The Self ID debate will be very interesting.

NotMeOhNo · 08/09/2018 02:16

The elephant in the room, it would seem.

Cwenthryth · 08/09/2018 07:20

Morning, sorry phone issues last night!

I wouldn’t say elephant in the room, so much as there are a million and one other things that women (and a smattering of men) wanted to talk about last night (see Rhyme’s summaries of people speaking at the open mic). People were raising issues dear to them that were not being spoken about anywhere else, so I think there was a general feeling there as no need to talk about GRA then. It’s on the agenda for the main conference, it is going to come up! Last night was a wonderful atmosphere. So much passion, inspiration and support in the room. Connections being made and small cogs whirring.

There is a fear of trouble. I’m not quite sure what kind of trouble - someone mentioned concerns about protestors turning up outside, or people generally being nasty to each other in debates. Also unclear whether this trouble is expected from TRAs or gender critical activists or both. In Sandi’s opening speech she called for tolerance and spoke along the lines of if you disagree with someone, good, society would be weird if we all agreed, if you’re angry, great - channel that, constructively, and do something with it. But tolerance, respect etc at conference.

The people I’ve chatted with about GRA (mostly pro from what I can tell, but people are guarded) all seem content with the idea of the emergency motion allowing special debates, and then the issue going to consultation with the wider membership. So fingers crossed that’s how it goes.

SPOFS · 08/09/2018 07:20

Will the emergency self-I'd thing be only 3 minutes then?

Cwenthryth · 08/09/2018 08:05

No the 3 minutes was the time individuals were permitted at open mic night to talk about whatever they wanted to talk to the room about. Complete free reign, no pre-moderation. Sandi stood up next to one woman who was nervous speaking to support her, not knowing what she wanted to talk about (it was PhD research into women’s safety online and how feminists use social media).

Also 3 min time limit on individual speakers during debates but not debates themselves. There is a timetable for Sunday - and over 30 motions to be debated - GRA is only one. There is 65 mins timetabled for equalities legislation (1 of 10 categories on the agenda) and there are 4 motions under that - equal pay & equal caregiving; including socio-economic status in the EA; maintaining EA protections (amendment to GRA motion); and the GRA motion.

I'm back! Have made (electronic) contact with two other MNers here.

Am now in a session about inequalities in health. All very interesting and important.

OP posts:
RhymesWithOrange · 08/09/2018 10:33

Second session. Big data: will technology fix inequality or deepen it.

Speakers so far are really interesting, if not strictly all about big data. Talking about sex robots now.

The twitter hashtag is #WE2018 if anyone wants to see more about what’s going on.

Am now in a session about inequalities in health.

Gah, if I'd seen this area I'd have asked you to say Hello to Hannah Bareham-Brown for me. :)

RhymesWithOrange · 08/09/2018 11:03

Hannah was awesome. They all were.

Waiting for the next session to start, "grossly undervalued domestic product" - women, economics, pay gap, caring etc.

I've seen some women with the Fair Play for Women leaflet and discussing it but I didn't want to eavesdrop.

OP posts:
tiredandweary · 08/09/2018 11:08

Sounds a great selection of women's issues being debated - how refreshing.
Now if they can boot that elephant out of the room and get back to their one core purpose (it's in the name), then just maybe they might offer an alternative to the other dire political parties.

RhymesWithOrange · 08/09/2018 11:50

Sandi was brilliant. Standing ovation for her. Funny and informative.

OP posts:
Cwenthryth · 08/09/2018 12:04

Sandi was amazing, spoke intelligently, passionately, entertaining and deadly serious.

Her best line was about building an economy that serves our society, rather than a society that serves our economy.

In response to a question from the floor, she also revealed that she is paid 40% of what Stephen Fry was paid for QI, and the same as Alan Davies (who isn’t the host).

MnerXX · 08/09/2018 12:33

A really good range of topics. Sounds brilliant. Hope everything goes well for the GRA stuff

Cwenthryth · 08/09/2018 12:33

Seeing some FPFW ‘hands off my rights’ leaflets about. And overhearing encouraging conversations.

RhymesWithOrange · 08/09/2018 13:04

Leader's speech. Lots of love in the room for Sophie.

OP posts:
RhymesWithOrange · 08/09/2018 13:42

Funny gag about clitorises. Fairly uncommon topic for party leaders' conference speeches Grin

Themes: hope; making a difference in a different way; how men consistently fuck up the economy and politics; Brexit; male privilege; gender pay gap; over emphasis on male dominated area of the economy - construction, manufacturing, financial services; disproportionate effect of public service cuts on women.

Lots of great stuff and a chuck of easily digestible sound bites for the meedja.

Lots of clapping and whooping. I'm not much of a whooper.

The self organised GC women and men are meeting. It's exciting! Feeling of urgency, of the vital importance of this work.

OP posts:
Popchyk · 08/09/2018 14:37

Ooh.

Be really interested to hear the outcome of that Rhymes.

Even managing to get together to have a conversation about it is a victory at this point.

RhymesWithOrange · 08/09/2018 14:41

It felt dangerous at first. But it's bloody lovely to be amongst like minded people.
