I just can't even right now - "trans" toddler

NC for this because very un-PC

Acquaintance has a three-year-old girl, who has decided that she is a boy. Has picked a different name, a different birthday (?) and Mum is extremely vigilant about defending this child's New Identity in all directions. Nursery, grandparents, colleagues have all been told, and parenting support group (mostly academics) are terribly supportive whenever anyone refers to this child as "she." She's even posted links to those weird sites that sell fake penises for small children (so that they can have an authentic bulge in their nappies?) so I assume the kid is packing one of those.

This has been going on for a good few months now.

Recently the mum posted that the child regularly has epic two-hour tantrums.

I can't help but think well, you're letting the kid insist that their name, their physical makeup, and their birthday can be altered at will and every adult around them must bow down accordingly, does it really surprise you that the kid can't cope with life when other things aren't treated the same?

Venting here because this sort of thinking is verboten in real life. Is this one of those things where once you have a toddler of your own you get a totally different perspective?

I'm also a little cynical about the truthfulness of this story truth be told...

Really? Despite the fact (and it's on record) that Jazz Jennings' parents decided Jazz was a transgirl at 18 months because of undoing the babygro poppers?

I was a Tomorrow Person (1970s kids TV series) and used to jaunt around the playground at primary school. My parents never believed I could time travel though and I think claiming to be a boy would have been viewed as just as unlikely.

Space travel not time travel, that's Dr Who who my son pretended to be.

My 3.5 year old DS announced he’s a girl today. I told him he’s actually a boy and he says he wants to turn into a girl.

But he also regularly says he’s a cat so I’m not booking the gender reassignment yet. Since he’s 3 ffs.

The mother sounds crazy. At 3 my daughter had a number of periods of wanting to be called by a different name. Usually an adult they liked. Once I had a day where I had to address her as Mummy! We humoured her. She outgrew it. A friend’s son at 7 still thinks he’s a spy and his name is top secret. Kida are kids.

Here's a US doctor (Dutch originally) talking about her own child. twitter.com/Skeptical_Mom/status/1036366662310813696 She specialises in the obs/gynae care of female-bodied trans-identifying people.

Here she is on Facebook supporting a motion to get WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) to officially deny the existence of rapid onset gender dysphoria. www.facebook.com/groups/transgenderhealth/permalink/2120311174679964/

If anyone can explain to me how a pre-verbal baby can 'come out' as transgender to her/his parents, I'd be most interested to know.

So sad. Can't understand why social services or the Utah equivalent have not been involved.

My son used to own TWO sets of space wings (one to wear, one in the wash). In the winter, he wore them over his coat. I can clearly remember being on an East London bus and him wondering aloud why ‘everyone was looking at his wings’.

He is 18 now and no longer identifies as Buzz Lightyear.

Oh God. I have just rememberwd that I had a boys ride-on toy when I was little. It was a bright pink space rocket and a hand-me-down from my brother. I also had mecano (because I wanted it - I especially loved my little guillotine).

Where's my pay rise?
