And there were no languages other than English, presumably.

Hi, I'm a 12th century wyfman and my pronouns are:
Ho, hir
My old man is: he/his
Or we could go thay (but I can't do a thorn) / hem

Agree bio. I reckon we are not taught enough about how our bodies and hormones work. To think I had been menstruating for over 20 years before I realised how vaginal mucus tells you about fertility and is not a dirty inconvenience. Ovulation pain had been crippling me every month for over a decade but again I only realised recently what it was and how to get rid of it. I wish I'd been able to talk more frankly to more women about this shit growing up. I wish it had been taught in school.

The Dream of the Rood is a poem written in English sometime between the 8th to 10th centuries. A quick look at it in the original and modern translation, and without knowing Anglo Saxon, shows that it uses the words ‘mother’ and ‘womankind’ (mōdor and wīfa cynn, I think)

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2018 20:00

Shon could have made the point about the cultural and historical limitations of gender stereotypical clothing with an image search for 'child jesus' . Many frocks, some of them pink.

Some people are a crisp butty short of a picnic

And on Shon's philosophical musings..

Shon Faye thinks the words "girl", "woman" and "she" were "invented" in the 13th century
ItIsOkItIsASecret · 29/08/2018 20:17

The guy's intellect knows no beginning. 😂

BraveAndStunning · 29/08/2018 20:18

and on the cis crapoid...

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 29/08/2018 20:22

What Faye seems to think, is that women are nowhere near as intelligent as the information their quick google provides. There couldn’t be a woman out there better versed in the likes of languages, classical philology or linguistics. Faye’s word is final.

And there could certainly never be a woman with scientific skills and knowledge that could knock Faye’s into a cocked hat.

ItIsOkItIsASecret · 29/08/2018 20:22

@BraveAndStunning

What about 'man'?

BraveAndStunning · 29/08/2018 20:23

Women's shifting fannies shooting out babies and blood from their uteruses all over fucking yer constellations, places and times Shon. And not by a penises in any context.

BraveAndStunning · 29/08/2018 20:25

Don't understand your question ItIs

ItIsOkItIsASecret · 29/08/2018 20:25

I have a friend who firmly believes in male brain/female brain.

When i pointed the above dress/pink fact to her, she explained that one of her sons likes pink as well as blue and this only serves to prove her point further.

She's a really intelligent woman too. Really intelligent.

ItIsOkItIsASecret · 29/08/2018 20:29

@BraveAndStunning

Sorry, I just meant that if Shon's definition of 'woman' is that it is a "shifting constellation..." etc blah blah, I just wondered what Shon's definition of 'man' might be.

(Probably still dosn't make sense!!)

BraveAndStunning · 29/08/2018 20:32

Who can tell. But it's probably some form of 'manly Godman from manland' as it's only women who get told who and what they are

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 29/08/2018 20:36

These novaramedia intellectual types really do throw a glaring light on the state of equality of opportunity in this country

Alicethroughtheblackmirror · 29/08/2018 20:37

I actually had to learn Anglo Saxon back in the dark ages (last century anyway)

Anglo Saxon femine:
Nom - Heo, hio
Acc - hie, hi
Gen- hire
dat- hire

I can confirm masculine is different:
He
hine
His
him

If it's all so 'made up' why do shon and co care so much about their pronouns?

Anyway, does this mean we can now use 'heo' for Shon instead of 'she'? Can't object...

AngryAttackKittens · 29/08/2018 20:40

The fact that men used to wear heels and now heels = sexy womanly woman is an argument that what's associated with which sex in terms of clothes etc is socially constructed, and can therefore be deconstructed, evolve over time, etc. Which means that wanting to wear heels doesn't mean you have any sort of inner womanly essence - maybe you're just stylish, maybe you identify as a 17th Century aristocrat and would be happier with some frills and a nice pair of breeches too.

Does he think that everyone who disagrees with him about innate genderfeels wants men to dress like lumberjacks? Because if so that's pretty funny. And sad, but also funny. Isn't he in his 30s? You'd think he'd be aware that the 80s and the New Romantics happened, and that most of the eeevil woman he wants to enjoy our Erasure did, but many preferred Adam Ant.

BraveAndStunning · 29/08/2018 20:52

It doesn't matter who wore the heels, we all know who wore the trousers

Anlaf · 29/08/2018 23:23

(special mention to Alice who remembers the words in Anglo Saxon rather than furtively googling like me)

mansplain111 · 29/08/2018 23:32

anlaf. Fucking beautiful.

When did we lose the 4cases then? (Language Nerd)

FloralBunting · 29/08/2018 23:36

It's taking linguistic shenanigans to new heights to suggest that people didn't know what men and women were before mediaeval words were coined for them.

whathaveiforgottentoday · 29/08/2018 23:43

anlaf that's the best thing I've read for a long time.
