The article finishes with the conclusion:

what does it mean for the Liverpool ReSisters’s claim that “women don’t have penises”? Well, since gender identity is not determined by what kind of genitals someone has, a person with a female gender identity might well have a penis. In other words, yes, some women do have penises.

Katherine Jenkins, assistant Professor of Philosophy, Nottingham University

Her title is Dr. “Assistant Professor” is the job title equivalent to Lecturer Grade (lots of universities now use these American job title now - Senior Lecturers and Readers are “Associate Professors”).

RedToothBrush · 28/08/2018 21:43

Ok I'm going to get philosophical:

Women are equally able to be dickheads as men. Therefore women CAN have penises.

Can I have a title and lecture on philosophy now please?

OlennasWimple · 28/08/2018 21:53

Sigh

Why the rush to avow that TWAW? What's in it for her?

frazzled1 · 28/08/2018 22:00

Fantastic comments @womensvoicesmatter - of course a MNer Grin.

Have a Wine. (Wasn't sure whether to even mention your name earlier, crazy eh).

Woke points. She has her pronouns on her Twitter page.

Plus there is a lot of pressure now on academics to produce work that has impact beyond academia, something which is often quite difficult if you’re in a philosophy department (and trans activism is, of course, of the moment). Personally, I think there are some academics who are best kept in the ivory tower, well away from the public, to minimise the damage they can do.

Cracking takedown from @mrkhtake2 as ever:

I would love to buy that woman a drink or three, she is absolutely tireless.

Has fellow philosopher and feminist, Profesor K Stock, seen the piece, I wonder?

Oh yes she has.

I'm looking forward to the peer review...

Voice0fReason · 28/08/2018 23:58

The comments are a much better read than the article (which is utter drivel)

LadybirdsAreBirds · 29/08/2018 08:01

Silentcrow

Excellent rebuttal there.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 29/08/2018 08:55

The comments are very heartening! Honestly, what a pile of drivel. Really concerning that she's a professor, whatever weird system Nottingham use for that.

Oscarino · 29/08/2018 09:23

This is the same level of intellectual rigour as Katiewhatever on Twitter announcing “you say women don’t have penises, well I’m a woman and I have a penis, so you’re wrong “

hackmum · 29/08/2018 09:28

It does read a bit like an undergraduate essay designed to prove that black is white.

George Orwell, whose wisdom constantly comes to mind during this whole debate, once wrote: "There are some ideas so wrong that only a very intelligent person could believe in them."

So much this Grin

I saw a news item online this morning about how a businessman had written to Farage (who is his MEP) to ask how Brexit would actuall benefit his business. He got a load of guff back telling him about "democracy" and to read philosophy - it even named some philosophers he 'should' read.

It looks like "philosophy" is now the go-to answer for people who find facts inconvenient.

FloralBunting · 29/08/2018 12:03

This is an embodiment of the argument from authority isnt it? I am a philosophy prof. and I have decided transwomen are women, therefore it is so.

This is why some professions get God complexes.

Starkstaring · 29/08/2018 12:49

How about some new stickers:

"Adult human of the female sex do not have penises"

Then let's provide some spaces, only where necessary to secure privacy and safety, for "adult and young humans of the female sex".

Then wear what you want and do what you want outside of that.

TimeLady · 31/08/2018 12:07

The comments on this are now worth a read Grin

Interesting that the esteemed professor hasn't tried to defend her position.
