De lurking to just leave this here...

I agree and support the stop funding hate campaign, but found it this frustrating....

Stop funding hate

Yes - the use of the word "hate" whenever anyone utters the slightest word of scepticism or even asks for discussion is yet another instance of how meanings are being misappropriated.

ZuttZeVootEeVro · 22/08/2018 14:06

For some people, school girls shouldn't have a right to safety and dignity. Any talk of safeguarding little girls is hate.

VickyEadie · 22/08/2018 14:08

Yes. Because it comes second to the 'needs' and desires of men.

Datun · 22/08/2018 14:18

Like all the other words, (transphobic, terf, etc,) the term 'hate speech' is getting diluted to the point of ridicule.

People will read. The advertisers, the readership. They will read what is being termed hate speech.

Women wanting to talk about a law change, and pointing out that one protected characteristic does not trump others, simply isn't hate speech.

Women pointing out the sexual motivation underpinning the transition of some men, isn't hate speech.

Women wanting safety isn't hate speech.

Even if you vehemently disagree with what women are saying, it still isn't hate speech.

People either think you're a snowflake millennial without a clue, or you have a hidden agenda. The words hate speech are increasingly being put in inverted commas as they get applied to more and more ludicrous situations.

sanluca · 22/08/2018 14:22

Agree with the dilutijg of the words 'hate speech'. It is used too often and for things that are not hate speech in any sense of the definition. The fact someone doesn't like what is said, doesn't make it hate speech.

I was chuckling about the comments though, it is as if no one had realised what all those nasty mean women were on about and now all of a sudden it becomes clear and they all go 'eh what?'

FloralBunting · 22/08/2018 14:26

Yes. It's actually kind of frightening how easily the insult 'Nazi' trips off the type on the internet, because the power of the critique is being persistently diluted with ever more ridiculous applications.

I used to cringe when called a Bigot. Couldn't give a monkey's now, because the sting of the accusation has simply lost it's currency through such liberal misuse. Same for 'Hate speech'.

Eventually, not too far hence, probably for the crime of an assertion of straight forward biological fact, I will be called a Nazi so often it will have lost any shock value or horror. Which is genuinely a dreadful thought.

TransplantsArePlants · 22/08/2018 14:39

Every single thing I've read from a TRA is what we are accused of being - "hysterical", and overblown. It's really rather striking and so obvious to the causal observer.

Popchyk · 22/08/2018 14:44

Dear Morrisons,

I am writing to you because you sponsor the Daily Mail. There was an article yesterday by Sarah Vine that was hate speech about transgender people.

I can't actually articulate what was hateful about it, or quote any hateful passages or hateful words from the article, but it was definitely hateful.

Yours

A. Numpty

Melamin · 22/08/2018 14:59

Good letter Grin

DodoPatrol · 22/08/2018 15:13

Quite a lot of the comments on the article were genuinely hate-filled, but a lot of the hate seemed to be directed at the government or nebulous left-wing-think. Frothier than a cappuccino, most of them.

LangCleg · 22/08/2018 15:27

I think Stop Funding Hate have a worthy mission that they regularly overstep into authoritarianism. Frankly, it's a gift to the far right.

Oldstyle · 22/08/2018 15:29

I found that depressing too - a good organisation that I've supported in the past now ignoring girls' feelings and safety. And the comments I saw were all siding with the 'trans trumps all' viewpoint. Off to look at pictures of kittens.

HavingALittleBabyToolshed · 22/08/2018 15:38

I think it is hateful that I now can’t use the toilets in public places, the gym or go to women only swimming sessions because I’m a rape victim and childhood domestic violence survivor who cannot be intimate spaces with male bodied people.
Who campaigns for us?

Just wanted to fulsomely agree with this from Datun!

Ereshkigal · 22/08/2018 15:44

Also what Toolshed said.

Accidents · 22/08/2018 16:45

India Willoughby was on Talk radio today, Anne Widcombe gave advice that India should talk to Holocaust survivors, that nobody is rounding up trans people and putting them in concentration camps.

Dawn Butler looks like a troll and I don't even like Jamie Oliver the sugar thief.

thebewilderness · 22/08/2018 22:11

2nd rule of misogyny: Women saying no to men is a hate crime.

SunsetBeetch · 09/09/2018 09:16

Now they have chosen Richard Littlejohns article about Linda Bellos as their example of "hate". They can fuck all the way off.

Stop funding hate
IAmLurkacus · 09/09/2018 09:26

I stopped funding hate a long while ago. It’s been years since I bought, read or clicked on the guardian.

I do not fund their hatred of women. I also boycott virgin since their attack on free speech by banning the mail.

Exactly what is ‘stop funding hate’’s actual agenda?

We’re all adults, we all learnt about bias in school and can read what we like and assess it for ourselves. What is ‘stop funding hate’’s bias and what are they achieving with this?

arranfan · 09/09/2018 09:35

So many young people allegedly don't know about WW2 or the Holocaust (every so often, there are reports/surveys about this). The NPR item about such a report in the US ends: It's hard to tell people to never forget when they haven't heard.

www.npr.org/2018/04/14/602443782/the-startling-statistics-about-peoples-holocaust-knowledge

When people use this language, have they genuinely forgotten, or they know better but don't care what they're doing to make a point?

If "Nazi" and "hate" are tossed around so freely, what meaning can they have? The meaning of both is diluted beyond recognition. We're witnessing semantic change/degradation in real time. And, apart from the inappropriate use, they are weakening the horror of what they represent.

doedoe90303811 · 09/09/2018 09:37

Stop Funding Hate have been doing this for a while. It's bullshit.

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 09/09/2018 09:51

This is exactly what I’ve been thinking. I Don’t even like the term “hate speech” it smacks of Orwellian newspeak used to oversimplify and indicate without providing any explanation. It is used to cover activity and mislead. I’m in full favour of sticking to good old fashioned, (if time consuming,) description that has true meaning in real life, and that cannot be seized upon and twisted. How would their opposition to these particular articles be headlined or communicated without the term I wonder.

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2018 10:10

They can indeed fuck all the way off. How about hatred of women?
