Claim: The campaign group Fair Play for Women claimed 41% of transgender women in prison are convicted sex offenders.
Reality Check verdict: A government survey has counted 125 transgender prisoners in England and Wales, but the Ministry of Justice says these figures are not yet a reliable reflection of the true numbers. The MoJ says 60 of them have been convicted of one or more sexual offences but it didn't identify their gender. There are likely to be more trans inmates, on shorter sentences and who are less likely to be sex offenders, who don't show up in this data.
60/125 is actually 48%, so a higher figure than FPfW stated. Guessing that there may be more that were not counted, is not a solid refuting of the statistic. And I doubt the MOJ would not be able to track short term prisoners, for goodness sakes! And indicating that this is the case (lack of accurate counting on short term trans prisoners) actually has to INCREASE the trans prisoner count dramatically to make that 41-48% figure go down significantly. They are already over-represented in the prison stats as it is. Not sure that the BBC's fix actually makes trans come off looking good at all.
What a rather pathetic attempt at hiding the problem.
