My experience of communal open plan changing rooms is of women getting changed modestly under towels or more freely but within their own space... maybe one every so often doing naked wandering but very, very rare. I don't think I've ever seen a woman go and admire her naked self in a communal mirror. Most people seem to get the "being naked" part of the changing process over with as quickly as possible.

The thing is, even if the incident described in the reddit post didn't actually happen, it is a disturbing fantasy that is waiting to become reality very quickly.

I read this yesterday. I'm an older woman who accepts that a small minority of men feel the need to become women. However, I'm struggling with those whose 'need' is limited to only wearing women's clothes. Walking through town, just after I read it I passed two men, who were quite intimidating looking, the way they spoke and their expressions. They were both very masculine facially and in build, and they were dressed in female style clothing. It struck me how uncomfortable I'd feel in a communal women's changing room if either of them were there.

I don't think it would be "handled" at all. I had a dispute a while ago with a gym I was using because male staff kept entering the women's changing room during operational hours for various reasons. They'd knock first and call "Can I come in?", but as I said repeatedly, if a woman were in the shower and no-one else in the room (as often happens when I'm there), she wouldn't hear. I told them it was wrong and they shouldn't do it.

Took me weeks to get them to agree that only female staff would, in future, enter the room during operational hours.

Just to add to my story above - this is not the first gym I've belonged to in which this happens. Two years ago I was alone in the changing room when a male cleaner entered - this was at about 11am.

I complained and got a load of guff about how sometimes they don't get all the cleaning done before operational hours start, blah blah (this was a gym that opened at 6am, I should add).

I'm generally quite relaxed about communal changing, from years of sport.
In a communal changing area, if I need to be fully naked, then I face the wall and avoid eye contact. It's not about feeling ashamed of my own body, but giving other people some privacy. Like a crowded commuter train.
I have never stood in front of a mirror naked in a changing room to look at myself, nor have I seen other women do this. If I needed to sort out personal grooming, I'd put at least my underwear on first.
