What's happening with Self ID in New Zealand?

paintedwingsandgiantrings · 16/08/2018 04:15

Is it a similar story to the UK?

I saw a petition on Twitter, and someone said "Transactivists got self ID on the cards after a petition like this had 48 signatures"

Does anyone know about this? What's the story over there?

From the petition, it sounds like they're going through much the same process - they mention a consultation also.

Does anyone wonder about the pace of this? It seems it's being lobbied to hard in English speaking countries so we change our laws around the same time.

Are there NZ feminist organisations fighting back also? Could they use our help maybe?

Ok, I’ll jump in. I’m interested to hear their stance but I’d guess a lot of NZers would support self IDing.

EnterSpaceCapsule · 16/08/2018 05:11

How very colonial of you. Hmm Do they need your help?

This isn't about the trans issue, just pointing out that colonial attitudes have fucked over NZ and Australia. Keep your beak out unless you are asked, would be my advice.

Eketahuna · 16/08/2018 05:13

Most NZers have no clue what's happening. That petition you linked to just got going this morning as pushback by the newly formed Lesbian Rights Alliance Aotearoa (NZ) to the proposed Self ID legislation which is similar to what's proposed in the UK.

The Left is seriously divided on this.

Here's a recent press release:

Iused2BanOptimist · 16/08/2018 06:30

The press release seems to be an excellently worded explanation. NZ seems well ahead on allowing men into women's sports so I suspect a pushback is overdue. Also notwithstanding comments about colonialism there does seem to be an international push on this which perhaps isn't surprising considering the financial backing to the whole trans rights movement. So it certainly is worth keeping an eye on what is going on in other countries. Whether they want our help is another matter.

colonial attitudes Hmm

What ever happened to solidarity?

But - to put your mind at rest, it's OK, NZ feminists have asked for help via twitter, so this isn't colonialism.

This was shared by a NZ friend this week:

'MPs recommend that gender changes to birth certificates be made easier for applicants'
12 Aug, 2018
(extract)
"People will be able to change genders on their birth certificate by way of a statutory declaration, instead of needing confirmation by a judge, under a bill reported back to Parliament.

And they will have options others than male or female – the options of "intersex" or "X (unspecified)" will also be available if Parliament adopts the recommendations of the Governance and Administration Committee on the Births, Deaths, Marriages and Relationships Registration Bill.

The move to self-identification for gender changes on birth certificates rather than needing the approval of a court and medical evidence brings it into line with passports and drivers' licences, committee chairman and National MP Brett Hudson said.

The bill is in the name of Internal Affairs Minister Tracey Martin, a New Zealand First MP. Assuming she has the support of her caucus, the changes look set to get the unanimous support of the Parliament." (continues)

There is a NZ petition to consult with women before making changes to gender self-id:

There's a thread on GC Reddit asking for all women to sign the petition against self ID

Colonial Confused odfod.
This is how identity politics has killed the possibility of solidarity movements.
Also you clearly don't know anything about Australia or NZ. Most of us regard ourselves as colonial oppressors, being, you know, white settlers...

LighthouseSouth · 16/08/2018 21:47

colonial FFS!!

it's about the fact that other countries have experiences too and we can actually yannow, SHARE.

I say this as someone whose parents hail from a former colony btw - just getting that in before someone says "but you don't UNDERSTAND".

I wish I'd paid more attention to what was happening in the US when it all started over there. It would have saved me some learning time and some shock!

New Zealand has that weight lifter on their second career? Dropped out of the commonwealth competition due to injury?

NotMeOhNo · 16/08/2018 22:31

New Zealand has been pioneering neoliberalism for years. It's no surprise that their Establishment have been sucked into the trans cult. There were a couple of brave women who protested about transing kids at Auckland Pride recently. University campuses outlaw any women only collectivism. This is important reading. reneejg.net/2018/07/03/censorship-backing-blackmail-backlash/

Please give them a boost and sign the petition - just needs a name and email, doesn't matter where you live.

LoveCompost · 17/08/2018 21:16

Colonial? I actually think that it was generous of paintedwings to offer to help as this fight over here takes many hours a day...
