Transgender weight loss

I was looking up how many calories I should eat in a day and had to give my age, height and gender.

Now if I was a transwoman would I put male or female? Female would presumably be my preference but then I would get the wrong results for what I want to achieve.

So I would have to put male. Which would indicate that, despite what we are being told, transwomen do know that they are not actually biologically female.

So why is it so hard for them to agree that transwomen are not, in fact, women but just want to be treated as if they were?

Wouldn’t this be complicated by taking the hormones necessary for transitioning? I’ve heard that these can make weight control very difficult.

PeakPants · 10/08/2018 21:44

Yes, I think that taking estrogen would probably mean you're better off sticking to the guidelines for women. I doubt it's the most pressing concern either. No one size fits all with calories, for women or men.

did it take a lot of mental gymnastics for this to be a thing you are concerned about?

seriously. step away from the internet.

ColumboHere · 10/08/2018 21:56

Well of course there will be transwomen that don't take hormones as they don't have to physically transition at all do they.

There must be other times when they have to acknowledge that they're not actually biological women even if it's only to themselves. The point is, they must know it.

I know, right? OP thinking the entire debate boils down to a question of which box you tick on the NHS BMI calculator.

ColumboHere · 10/08/2018 21:59

How do you mean? I'm saying that transwomen must know that they are not actually biological women when faced with real biological choices surely?

Well yes, I would imagine they know. But the weight loss thing is ridiculous anyway because there are huge variations in calorie-need, regardless of sex.

acatcalledjohn · 10/08/2018 22:26

Not all transpeople transwomen accept biology, hence the regular debates re women's rights on MN.

I'd put your stats in as both male and female, and pick a number in the middle of the two somewhere. Follow that for a month, see what progress you've made, and then adjust if/as necessary. Because as much as biology says you are a man, it's not unthinkable that any hormones you take affect weight loss/gain.

If you use an app such as MFP you can manually set your calories anyway.

What @exWifebeginsat40 said

There's no point scratching around for silly trans threads for the sake of it. It just dilutes the main debate and makes us look fucking daft.
