Long overdue article about how chuggers almost always approach women (91 women for every 6 men in the observation period), use gendered intimidation tactics and take advantage of women being socialised to be 'polite.'

There are many chuggers where I live and I've definitely noticed the same thing, they will approach women the most. It's likely because we care more and don't want to appear coldhearted and might have trouble saying no. I just walk right past them now, no comment.
I remember one time in particular very well were I observed a chugger try his absolute best to manipulate a younger woman he had stopped - as she walked, he kept walking next to her and when she said she could afford it (monthly donations) he replied "oh I bet you can!"
This is why they need to be told no or ignored from the start.

And yes they make high street shopping a nuissance. I am not a evil child-hater because I need to buy clothes instead of giving you the money, thanks.

*could not afford

The definitely target mothers with prams/children, especially the NSPCC ones. Doesn't stop me striding past and I suppose it's an obvious gambit if you're a chugger.

I think 20 years of working in chugger central has got rid off my polite female socialization. Same with beggars and doorstoppers.

It's still there in other aspects of life (finding it hard to say no) but I am bulletproof when it comes to people trying to make me part with cash. I decide when and where I spend my money, not some student on the street who couldn't give a shit about Battersea Dogs Home, or wherever.

i am surprised it's still worth the Charities while.

I have actually got quite far into a conversation with a chugger before realising they wanted my bank details and not a one off payment and making excuses and running away. At the time I was very embarrassed, but now I’m quite proud of wasting 10-15 mins of their time Grin
