I didn't realise that Stop funding hate also campaigned against any discussion of trans issues 🤔.

That's a bit of a jump from what they've said Plants. Be mindful that when we overstate things it can really alienate people (waves to lurkers) we're trying to get on board.

The link has them noticing two articles with headlines calling it "transgender nonsense" and "transgender lunacy", which, in all fairness and not having read the articles, in not going to make them look like balanced or unbiased reporting!

Subtlety and nuance wins hearts and minds. Name calling, slanging, and exaggerating doesn't usually.

Although, the red tops have been doing that for ever and still get massive readership and enormous influence. Mmmm. Confused myself there.

But stop spreading hate aren't doing the thing you said really, unless there's something else there? I usually support them so I want to know if they're going of the rails.

I haven't read the articles either, Reo, so like you have no idea if saying something is nonsense or lunacy is fair or not.

Perhaps we both should read the articles before criticising op?

PlantsOfPerspective · 27/07/2018 18:33

Maybe it was a bit of a leap 😄😳, I was in a rush.

I could only access and read one of them (not the AW one).

I stopped following them on FB a little while back when they used the t word (am I allowed to say it if reporting?) for women disagreeing on gender issues.
Unfortunately, I didn't screenshot it and can't find it now. Perhaps they deleted it.

Wanderabout · 27/07/2018 19:12

What have Hope not Hate said about the violent rhetoric around TERF, the rape and death threats towards women, the assault and recorded incidents of intimidation, the bomb threats all against women wanting to defend their rights?

Hope not Hate must be horrified by it all, what have they been doing on this?

REOLay · 27/07/2018 19:24

Dunno wanderabout. Have you had a look on their site search?

It looks like they give their supporters a say in how they respond to things so mayb if there is stuff in the press outlets they cover that is hateful to GC feminism that could be brought to their attention. Is there anything in the press right now that you'd could point up for them?

esmew · 27/07/2018 19:46

Stop funding hate have been backing trans people for a while..

Wanderabout · 27/07/2018 20:06

Thanks REO I'll have a look.

Being for trans people is great. Being against women not so much.

REOLay · 27/07/2018 21:17

It looks like they have had some real success with the Express so far on headlines that are negative about immigrants. Hadn't seen their work before - pretty impressive.

Wanderabout · 27/07/2018 21:19

I thought you usually supported them REO ?

REOLay · 27/07/2018 21:56

In a passing sort of way, but never been to their site before or really looked at what the policies and outcomes are. Like, they are against hate so yay them but without actually knowing what they do Blush . Pure laziness. Need to stop doing that!

PlantsOfPerspective · 28/07/2018 09:22

Snap REOLay 😳.

Even Stop Funding Hate put the changes in the Express down to new ownership and editor.

Shampooeeee · 28/07/2018 13:19

I stopped supporting them a while ago when I opened my eyes to how dangerous it can be to try to silence the media.
A lot of the articles they criticise are awful- racist, fear mongering, lazy journalism, etc, but when they started criticising articles reporting on trans issues, I took notice of their methods.
I'm now embarrassed that I supported them at all. I think they use bully tactics to try to create a backlash against certain opinions. Even if those opinions are wrong, it's much better to oppose them than to silence them.

PositivelyPERF · 28/07/2018 13:26

I don’t support them, because I think they’re trying to control the press, and by doing so, the public. If we silence the press, we silence opinion. I may intensely dislike what many papers say, looking at you DM, but I refuse to support a group that risks becoming the ‘new’ bullies.

Freespeecher · 28/07/2018 15:36

I see Owen Jones is running a campaign to have LBC sack Farage from his talk radio slot by targeting advertisers. LBC seem to go out of their way to have a wide range of hosts (such as Maajid Nawaz and James O'Brien) and it would be both a shame and worrying if the likes of Jones are allowed to effectively determine who is and isn't allowed on the airwaves.

PositivelyPERF · 28/07/2018 15:41

I can’t stand Farage, but I think it’s important to listen to all views, in order to understand why people feel a certain way. He’s narrow minded, but he still has the right to an opinion.

PlantsOfPerspective · 29/07/2018 00:25

I agree that Nigel Farage is entitled to his opinions, but I don't agree that he should get the disproportionate coverage that he gets.

The paradox of tolerance gives some food for thought:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradoxoff_tolerance

The paradox of tolerance was described by Karl Popper in 1945. The paradox states that if a society is tolerant without limit, their ability to be tolerant will eventually be seized or destroyed by the intolerant. Popper came to the seemingly paradoxical conclusion that in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance.

REOLay · 29/07/2018 13:03

Agree, and really value highly the paradox of intolerance. I ve a strong dislike of intolerance and that makes me respect what SFH are doing as an overall aim. Headlines and sound bites are hugely influential in how the masses feel and think, so it is important that they'd aren't used to manipulate public feeling and antagonise, or agitate bad feeling against immigrants.

Re free speech for farage, he should be permitted to air his views in the sense that he can't be arrested or imprisoned for them, but no one is obliged to give him a platform or to listen to him. He's made his position and leanings perfectly clear and consistent so it's not a suitable though you'll learn anything new by listening to him.
