Dr Stock has just tweeted this text of a motion to be put to the party conference in September

d3n8a8pro7vhmx.cloudfront.net/womensequality/pages/5826/attachments/original/1532600430/Fnl_Gender_recognition_act_motion_final.pdf?1532600430

Obviously the motion hasn't been passed yet.

Motion text: 1 The Women’s Equality Party recognises the damage done by socially constructed gender 2 stereotypes and supports changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004. The Women’s Equality 3 Party supports changes to the current process by which transgender people are able to receive 4 legal recognition of their changed gender.

5 The Women’s Equality Party supports a process of legal recognition of changed gender which does 6 not require medical reports nor two years’ worth of documentation but a process of self- 7 determination of gender. The Women’s Equality Party supports legal recognition of non-binary 8 people.

9 The Women’s Equality Party calls on the Governments and administrations of the UK to make the 10 following changes to the current process as they revise the Gender Recognition Act 2004:

11 ● Change to the requirement to submit two supporting medical reports, one of a diagnosis of 12 gender dysphoria and one detailing treatment received. Change to the requirement to submit 13 documentation to prove the person has lived as their acquired gender for two years. Instead 14 require a self-determination process to change gender and to obtain a Gender Recognition 15 Certificate and new birth certificate. 16 ● Remove the requirement of spousal consent to obtain legal recognition of changed gender for 17 married people. 18 ● Allow people to change their gender to a third gender option as well as to male and female.

Motion rationale:

19 The Women’s Equality Party should clarify its position as changes to the Gender Recognition Act 20 (GRA) 2004 are being considered by the Governments and administrations of the UK. This change 21 would add depth to the already stated Women’s Equality Party position of supporting the right of an

The women’s we don’t give a fuck about women’s party
And what’s the 3rd gender. Fecking pixies or elves 🧝‍♀️

Beamur · 27/07/2018 13:13

That's such a shame. They really ought to drop the 'Women' from their name.
I guess they don't want the GC vote.

SarahCarer · 27/07/2018 13:23

I'm with gendercritter . If gender is socially constructed (and it is) then EVERYONE IS ESSENTIALLY NON BINARY. And understanding that is absolutely key to equality. By confirming a minority as needing a special legal status of non binary which requires them to relinquish the legal status of their sex, the wep is supporting and actively upholding the socially constructed gender binary I.e. sexism.

OldCrone · 27/07/2018 13:30

Do the WEP realise that allowing everyone to choose their own legal sex effectively removes the protected characteristic of sex from the Equality Act 2010? Women and girls will lose all their protections under the EA.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 27/07/2018 13:37

Pro-penis policies in the WEP, well I never. Hmm

UglyCathKidstonBag · 27/07/2018 13:40

Hey WEP what about women and girls?

Can we tackle them on safeguarding?
Does anyone want to draft a letter to them that we can send en masse?
WEP would be just the kind of party I would join but it is a pro-penis party and alienating core demographics.

Anlaf · 27/07/2018 13:47

aargh

tbf to Sophie Walker - she is not on the list of supporters for this motion, and obviously the motion has yet to be passed. I've been rating very highly pretty much everything Sophie's said recently.

This motion is a real pity though isn't it - zero assessment of the impact on women.

There's none so blind as those who will not see, eh

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/07/2018 13:50

Hey @MNHQ, @JustineMumsnet, could you invite a WEP representative to a webchat to discuss this please?

They really need to get the views of ordinary women of all colours, creeds, professional, political and socio-economic groups outside of the bubble they inhabit.

Anlaf · 27/07/2018 13:54

The Women’s Equality Party recognises the damage done by socially constructed gender stereotypes and supports changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004.

Anlaf recognises that Brexit is harmful, and campaigns for a No-Deal Brexit.

Procrastinator1 · 27/07/2018 13:55

Wasn't Sophie Walker at the Fawcett Society event on 18 July? Difficult if you are on a panel I suppose, but she didn't say that 50% male and 50% trans women in Parliament was a bad idea.

OP posts:
Anlaf · 27/07/2018 13:59

Yes Sophie was - there is a transcript on this thread.
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3310443-Fawcett-Society-Live-stream-from-5-30pm-Courage-Calls-Ask-her-to-stand

She looked very po-faced while the others on the panel were singing the "yes this would be great" hymn.

But she did not say anything in disagreement.

BiologyIsReal · 27/07/2018 14:00

So, not satisfied with trans people being able to define their gender they also support them defining their sex as well. (lines 25/26).

Here lies madness.

BlytheByName · 27/07/2018 14:22

I had such high hopes for the WEP but they were dashed as soon as they failed to support Heather after the Moral Maze. They showed themselves to be spineless, and this motion is meaningless drivel.

I am politically homeless.

BlackeyedSusan · 27/07/2018 14:41

WIP where I= inequality

vicviking · 27/07/2018 14:57

WEP are like a dog in a manger. Absolutely no intention of helping women gain equality but they mop up the time, money and resources of women who do. And by occupying this space they make it harder for a real WEP to exist.

Procrastinator1 · 27/07/2018 15:05

Does anyone know if any of the proposers and seconders of the WEP motion are the same people who complained against Heather Brunskell Evans?

OP posts:
arranfan · 27/07/2018 15:17

WEP goes from strength to strength in the Disappointment Stakes.

Sophie Walker, Sandi Toksvig - what are you thinking?

Maybe they should form an over-arching alliance with the likes of Creasey for Equality Warriors Overtly Unconscious of their Privilege Alliance - EWOUPA

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 27/07/2018 15:23

The only thing I'd agree with is the bit about removal of spousal consent for transitioning. As long as transitioning becomes grounds for immediate divorce.

I disagree, if dh suddenly decided he was a she I should have the right to end the marriage before I am legally a married lesbian.

Lesbians should not be forced to undo "coming out" and dealing with their sexuality for years to suddenly be told they are straight now.

MinesAWhitMagnumPlease · 27/07/2018 15:37

Interesting to look back at this TED talk by Sandi Toksvig
www.ted.com/talks/sandi_toksvig_a_political_party_for_women_s_equality#t-1159929. Inequality in sport was one of the first things she noticed. Further in she talks about needing women at the table.

theOtherPamAyres · 27/07/2018 16:50

Let's not forget that this is a motion, put up by gender extremists within the party.

It could have no support whatsoever. Or, like the Green Party, when it had one of these 'transwomen are women' motions, there will be a lively and bitter debate with the people who joined the party specifically to push the nonsense through.

BoreOfWhabylon · 27/07/2018 16:54

I disagree, if dh suddenly decided he was a she I should have the right to end the marriage before I am legally a married lesbian.. Good point. I hadn't thought of it that way.

Wanderabout · 27/07/2018 16:54

When is the conference?

Floisme · 27/07/2018 17:42

I wonder if there will be a counter motion? Didn't Karen Ingala Smith say she was joining?

theOtherPamAyres · 27/07/2018 17:58

The Conference takes place at the Kettering Conference Centre
from Friday 7th September - Sunday 9th September.

Members can speak against or amend the motion. They will urge conference goers to throw the motion out.

I don't know if there's a public gallery for non-members and the press. Possibly.
