Modern Witches Confluence have a Trans Activist requested witch hunt against a witch!

So there’s soon to be a big Witches Workshop in California and a very well respected witch called Max Dashu was in the line up. Max is also a known feminist and lesbian.

Max went in the recent SAN Francisco dyke March and her actions on the March have enraged trans activists who have labelled her a terf and hounded the workshop organisers and they’ve now kicked her off.

Max’s crime? She marched near some lesbians who had banners along the lines of “women don’t have penises”. She wasn’t with them, she didn’t know about the banners beforehand. It kicked off and the lesbians were physically attacked by trans activists and Max shielded one of them.

Modern Witches Confluence have an open FB page with a load of transmaidens on it saying crap like there is no biological thing which makes a woman different from a trans woman.

I have pasted their fb statement here;

Modern Witches Confluence
18 July at 19:37 ·
Dear Community,
We sincerely apologize for involving Max Dashu in our workshop line-up. Since your community concerns have been raised regarding Dashu’s trans-exclusionary views, we have removed Max Dashu from our teaching line-up, and she will no longer be an influence on the Modern Witches Confluence. We appreciate you voicing your concerns, and we apologize for not responding to them sooner.
We should have done our research before asking Dashu to join us for our event, and after this incident, we know to do our due-diligence. We do not support or endorse those who shame, oppress, or exclude others. The success of our gathering will be built on a shared vision of inclusion, and the collective desire to liberate ourselves from societal rigidity, hatred, and separatist categorization.
We hope that by righting this wrong, the LGBTQ community and beyond will feel safe and welcomed to join us for our event in October. Please keep letting us know how we can do better. This is a community of many diverse voices, and we will need to keep voicing concerns, and listening, in order to grow and evolve.

Have also pasted a “witness statement” from a marcher at the Dyke March.

My partner and I carried the signs that have been deemed by this witch hunt you've ironically joined in to be "transphobic". Our signs said, "Biology is Not Bigotry"/"You Can't Silence Us With Violence ~Resist Lesbian Erasure~ and "Dangers of Puberty Blockers" (with a list of the dangers of Lupron used on children, such as increased risk of cardiovascular disease, liver disease, breast cancer, etc)/"Change Our Society Not Your Body".

The first sign was specifically about the erasure of female spaces and the policing/redefining of the very language that identifies us AS biological womyn. The second sign was aimed to educate on the dire health risks of puberty blockers administered to children. There was absolutely no hateful rhetoric spewed towards trans identifying people by us WHATSOEVER. Yet there was a whole lot of it yelled at us in addition to actual physical violence.

Max Dashu had no prior knowledge OF the signs we were to carry, except when she saw them at the BART station right before the march began. We had not even met her until that day. For the majority of the march she wasn't even marching near us. Only once did she close in and join us, which was when I was being violently attacked by trans activists. She wrapped her arms around me in a protective embrace, and for that I will be eternally grateful.

This is just beyond scary, I have been lurking in these threads the last few weeks, trying to get up to speed and reading all the different views, I just don't actually know what is happening in the world.
Op are your fellow witches happy that Max has been kicked off? Is this a case of honestly been tried as guilty even without hearing her out, honestly you wouldn't even be allowed to do that to actual criminals

PyeWackets · 21/07/2018 19:40

The irony is strong.

We need brave women to stand up and speak out against this nonsense.

NicoAndTheNiners · 21/07/2018 19:42

I’m not actually a witch but reading the comments on the fb announcement page there’s a lot of unhappy witches who say this is all a load of bollocks.

Have to say I’m disappointed. You’d have thought that you could count on Witches to support the feminist sisterhood.

That's awful. So all she did was stop a woman getting beaten up by violent misogynists? A bit like Helen Steel at the Anarchists Bookfair.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/07/2018 20:06

Batshit. It reads like a Monty Python skit.

Suggest Max forms her own coven of Real Witches and they cast spells against the TRAs.

Bowlofbabelfish · 21/07/2018 20:09

Woman 1 excercises democratic right to protest peacefully.

Woman 1 attacked physically for doing so

Woman 2 places self in danger to stop woman 1 from being harmed

Woman 2 attacked for associating with, and protecting woman 1 from physical attack.

Remind me why either woman 1 or 2 are the baddies again? I’m having some trouble conceptualising....

NicoAndTheNiners · 21/07/2018 20:24

I think that about sums it up babelfish

It is like a Monty Python sketch. I kind of wish I was a witch so I could cast a hex.

I googled Max Dashu as I’d never heard of her before this and she sounds like a really good person to know. She has a Wiki page and is described as a feminist historian and author.

Areas of expertise include the patriarchy. She left Harvard as they pissed her off and founded the Suppressed Histories Archive to research and document women’s history.

Is currently writing a 16volumne history of witches.

Sounds like this group should have been falling over themselves in gratitude that she ever agreed to attend and speak at their workshops.

Max Dashu is amazing. Her suppressed histories archives are really beautiful and affirming for women - they give as sense of belonging in this shared biology across time and place.

I bet part of the reason she is being picked on is because of her work.

thebewilderness · 21/07/2018 20:40

Transgender advocates and MRAs have targeted Max for a long time.
Her Suppressed History archives are brilliant.

blackdoggotmytongueagain · 21/07/2018 20:40

Thanks for this. I have seen Max Dashu referenced a lot today (not in context) and it wasn’t clear why. The fb comments on that link are interesting, and looking up the very few people who were in agreement with Max’s removal very easily shows a textbook TRA call for a pile on if you look in their personal fb pages (along with some insistent posting about tampons. Weird. I don’t think I’ve ever told a tampon anecdote. Oh wait. Maybe that one time where friend’s dog ate three (unused) and needed surgery).
Fascinating.
Next stop to check out Max and Starhawk’s pages.

Bowlofbabelfish · 21/07/2018 20:45

I’ll check out her work, it sounds fascinating.

FoldyRoll · 21/07/2018 20:53

I was watching this all kick off in real time a few days ago. There were many, many discussions going on under the no platforming statement and on the event page. Sentiment was at least 90% against the move and furiously GC. Supporters of 'inclusivity' had no arguments beyond 'lol you are all bigots.' The irony of trying to persecute witches was utterly lost on them.

Since then, a very heavy handed comment deleting fairy has been out to play.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 21/07/2018 20:54

when I was being violently attacked by trans activists. She wrapped her arms around me in a protective embrace, and for that I will be eternally grateful.
So Max sounds awesome!
She is basically being persecuted for being in the right place & at the right time- trying to prevent someone from being physically hurt Confused

WhereDoWeBeginToCovetClarice · 21/07/2018 20:56

She has a massive archive of slides that she has been slowly cleaning up and putting online. My favourite one that keeps coming back to me is this adorable sculpture from Peru I think, where a few mothers are squatting side by side, holding aloft the babies they have just birthed and looking them in the eye.

Such a lovely image. Made me wish I could give birth all by myself and look my own baby in the eye and have that pure experience without all the interferening feckers cutting the cOrd and weighing etc so I couldn't savour the moment of the enormity of what I'd just experienced.
So gorgeous and idillic

Waddlelikeapenguin · 21/07/2018 20:57

For anyone else interested Smile

So we have modern day witches punishing the accused for a complete non crime, and without a trial. (Ring a bell?)

And

"Women" resorting to using physical strength/ dominance and violence, attacking actual women for voicing their opinions, all the while claiming they're deep down really women too Hmm

Fucking hell, you really couldn't make this up!!

UpstartCrow · 21/07/2018 21:00

Guilt by association. Used and loved by totalitarianism the world over.

ElenOfTheWays · 21/07/2018 21:01

Suggest Max forms her own coven of Real Witches and they cast spells against the TRAs.

I'd join up. Grin

WhereDoWeBeginToCovetClarice · 21/07/2018 21:13

Also, I think her Facebook page is really nice to browse - there's loads more content than the website www.facebook.com/Suppressed-Histories-Archives-333661528320/

NicoAndTheNiners · 21/07/2018 21:45

Going to read through the archives now. That Peruvian slide sounds great.

I've put this on the Pussy church thread too. Max Dashu has updated and I think there's more about the incident on her website. For any supporters out there she has a Matreon (Patreon) account to support her work).

What Happened at San Francisco Dyke March
My account is long, so I'm linking it here. The short version is that ten lesbians (mostly in our 60s and 70s) were attacked and hounded by a group of younger queer ideologues through the entire march. Then, in a stunning reversal, we were blamed as the attackers, doxxed, and libeled on various queer pages. TERFing and formal exclusion of lesbian feminists are being carried out in the name of "inclusivity." Cognitive dissonance!

The result: I've been de-platformed
The Modern Witches Confluence, an event that had invited me to present in October, announced that they had dropped me from their lineup. I lost income from this attack on my speech and livelihood. I suspected that their arms had been twisted, and was able to verify that fanatics had demanded that they drop me or else. The organizers caved in order to prevent their event from being destroyed, as has happened in other cases. (For example, the Goddess Conference in Fayetteville, Arkansas, was forced to remove a workshop on Lesbian Erasure or the venue would cancel the entire event). The Witches Confluence posted an apology for inviting me on their event page, saying they should have investigated me (for TERFery!) first. Unholy hell broke loose on their event page as a result (much of which has since been deleted). Some people were demanding that I prove that I was not a "terf," but in spite of their scouring the internet, none of them came up with a shred of evidence for the allegations being slung.

I've been talking with Starhawk about holding Council to deal with this situation. The plan is for this to happen in September. I did speak with the main organizer of the Witches Confluence, and she apologized, but did not offer to reinstate me. I demanded that they take down the offensive statement from their page, and they modified it, though not to my satisfaction. But I am not calling for the event to be boycotted, nor is it necessarily my goal to be restored to a conference where the climate could well be hostile.

It may be that the Council will be able to establish a new consensus which is truly inclusionary, where people of diverse perspectives are welcome. We will see. The destructiveness of these misogynist "terf"-hunts, which continue to spread within GLBTQ, academia, the left, and paganism, has got to be addressed, even if disagreements are not resolved by a mediated dialogue. If we can achieve a recognition that "TERF" is a misogynist slur, that would be a step in the right direction.

As things stand now, once the ideologues have you in their sights, they don't let up. One attack leads to another, and then another. The next one came in an article published in Patheos. The author called for all organizations to no-platform me, Ruth Barrett, Z Budapest, and Luisah Teish, labeling us as "TERFs". This article was a retread of an earlier attack on Ruth and Z.

It's the new McCarthyism: "Are you now, or have you ever been a terf? Do you associate with known terfs?" But this time it is led by people who claim to be progressive, and the targets are virtually all women—especially lesbians, old women, radical feminists. People are screaming about "transphobia" while engaging in the harshest misogyny and homophobia, without even seeing the contradiction. This is why I'm doing the visual livecasts on Persecutory Culture this month, because they came for me.

These smears have chewed through six weeks of my life. I spent time and energy trying to correct the lies being spread around social media, and managing the flood of posts, emails and queries that continue to pour in. I engaged with them because there has to be a turning point. This witch-hunting cannot go on. It is destructive, and it is undoing what we worked for over decades. We desperately need coalition in these times.

I could write more, and have a lot more to say about all this, but for now I need to pull back from the furor and reflect. And get back to work. More content will be coming up on my new podcast page, on my Matreon, and soon, streamable videos on demand. Oh, and I've started reconfiguring my art site. Some prints and scrolls are already available there, and soon original drawings and paintings will be for sale too.

In the meantime, take heart. We are Amazons with a passion for justice, and don't give up as easily as all that, or ever bow down to bullying and intimidation.
Max

Max Flowers

This is tragic and infuriating.
How does a group of so-called witches not see that they are now engaging in a real-life witch-hunt? Am I the only one who remembers learning about those Salem witch-trials?
