Am I Agender? Are you?

Let’s forget the following facts

  • I was born with a vagina
  • I have a female body
  • I started menstruating aged 11
  • I develop breasts around the same age
  • I have been pregnant
  • I have birthed several children
  • I have had a c-section
  • I have breastfed some of those children
  • I have medical conditions that only impact women
  • I have been vaginally raped

BUT
I reject gender and I would not “identify” as a Follower if Genderism. I am a woman because I am an adult human female, I am not however a woman because of societal standards of gender. I am genderless.

If Agender is defined as
“a term which can be literally translated as 'without gender'. It can be seen either as a non-binary gender identity or as a statement of not having a gender identity. People who identify as agender may describe themselves as one or more of the following: Genderless or lacking gender.”
am I therefore Agender?
If I identify as Agender, will my opinion now be more or less valid when discussing Self ID etc.?

Does anyone else find themselves fitting neatly into the Agender category?

Stonewall made the trans umbrella so big we’re all under it now...

Sheltering from the gender fluid Grin

Sadly, not my joke, but one I stole from the always entertaining datalounge.com - NSFW!

I'm going to start all my consultation answers

'As an agendered individual (recognised under the Stonewall Trans umbrella) who identifies with biological sex....

@OvaHere 'As an agendered individual (recognised under the Stonewall Trans umbrella) who identifies with biological sex....

Yes, I was thinking it makes sense to do the same thing. Discussions on here show that many of us fit these new-fangled trans-identity definitions. Although we don't ordinarily identify as such because we also happen to think it's bullshit maybe if we were children of today we would. So in honour of a fully "woke" version of myself and for the purposes of the consultation, I plan to identify as an agender biological female and make clear my concerns regarding sex-based protections.

BettyDuMonde · 20/07/2018 11:26

Did stonewall open the trans umbrella so wide so as to claim greater statistical numbers of transpeople?

It really makes no sense to say cross dressers are women, and therefore should be able to represent women politically. It’s already a stretch when we’re talking full-time long term presenting-as-woman due to male bodied people not having the same societal challenges as female bodied people (such as being limited to the ‘mummy-track’ at work just because you are 30ish and might want maternity leave at some point in the next decade).

BarrackerBarmer · 20/07/2018 14:10

I am agender in the same way I am atelekinetic and acreationist and apsychic.

As in, it's bonkers to define myself in direct reference to a theoretical state of existence which I refute in the first place.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 20/07/2018 15:07

@BarrackerBarmer
Well of course it is bonkers! The whole bloody thing is bonkers. If they can label me cisgender what’s to stop them down the line putting another label on me?

If I could (and I’m not saying I will) use it to my benefit then what’s to stop me? Quite in the same way a man who doesn’t believe in gender could indentify as a woman to access women’s spces, what’s stopping him?

I can read a map and know one end of a screwdriver from the other. I am therefore not agender, I am a man.

I just happen to have a vagina, wear dresses and have grown a baby inside me and given birth to an amazing child, but that map reading ability makes me 100% a man Grin I want to be agender though, can I self identify as agender??? Confused

catkind · 20/07/2018 15:44

In all seriousness, if we lose this fight and I'm asked for gender identity rather than sex on forms, I'm going to have to identify as "non-binary" or "agender". Damned if I'm going to identify with gender, I have a deep internal feeling that it's a load of bollocks crappy stereotypes.

Vickyyyy · 20/07/2018 16:24

Yup, if I had to pick one of the bullshit terms for myself, it would be a-gender as I do not have a gender identity at all and think its just a bunch of stereotypes + personality

FeminaSum · 20/07/2018 16:32

I know what you mean, OP. I've been in many conversations on Twitter where TRAs say that I'm 'cis' despite my insistence that I don't have a gender identity. Usually the argument is that everyone has one, and if I'm not aware of mine and don't experience an innate feeling of gender, it's somehow proof that I'm 'cis.' Despite my extreme discomfort with performative femininity because - well, I'm a feminist. Gender is a social construct that harms women.

I started to ask them 'what about agender people?' with links from trans ideology-approved sites describing it. Usually, they then stop replying. I did have one individual try to tell me that I couldn't be agender because I described myself as a woman and 'woman is a gender' - according to this TRA, being agender means not calling yourself 'man' or 'woman' and using those silly made-up pronouns like xe. Not true according to any definition of being agender that I've read.

If we lose the fight, we may have to give up 'woman' and retreat to 'agender female' - which is awful, but I'd rather do that that use a word which has come to mean 'I willingly identify with feminine stereotypes' and nothing else.

LaundryLaundryLaundry · 10/10/2018 14:10

Where is this quiz, @Caaarrrl? I am yet to submit my consultation response and would like to identify myself correctly - as well as signpost those reviewing my response to it. Maybe they'll find they're agender too?

deepwatersolo · 10/10/2018 14:19

No, I am not agender. To be agender you would need to believe in the self-ID gender edifice in principle. A gendercritical person describing herself agender is akin to an atheist describing herself as a heathen, imo.

MagicMix · 10/10/2018 14:57

If agender means you don't IDENTIFY with a gender, then sure a lot of people are agender.

If agender means you do not HAVE any sort of gender, then no, nobody is agender. Gender is a tool of oppression and we are all affected by it whether we willingly submit to that or not. The whole point about gender is that it comes from without, not from within. When other people treat you 'like a woman' (in a way that is different from the way they would treat a man in the same circumstance) you are being gendered. We have all been gendered on a daily basis since we were born and obviously that affects the way we see ourselves and others and every single human interaction we have. We can and should resist that with all our might but we cannot opt out.

I do not identify with the feminine gender but I have been gendered feminine (and it sucks).

LangCleg · 10/10/2018 16:03

I am agender insofar as my Patreon is concerned.

Otherwise, I'm a woman. The proper kind.

Carrrotsandcauliflower · 10/10/2018 16:06

I don’t care about gender. At all. I won’t opt in or out because it serves no purpose for me.
