Not sure if this has been posted yet, but a good summary of the protest at pride

''Why does this matter so much? Because lesbians have consistently faced everything from mockery to violence for insisting on boundaries to their sexuality. For lesbians who know the history of “corrective rape” as a weapon against gender non-conforming women – the practical application of the old saw that all lesbians need to “fix” them is a dose of penis – this is a deeply alarming development in LGBT politics.''

Spot on.

Itscurtainsforyou · 15/07/2018 22:54

I think it gets the message across without "attacking" or devaluing the trans community - which many areas of the media would believe the protesters were trying to do

Thanks for sharing. What a great article.

UglyCathKidstonBag · 15/07/2018 23:05

This isn’t a frivolous concern. In 2012, Planned Parenthood ran a conference called “Pleasure and Possibilities” which included a workshop on “Overcoming the Cotton Ceiling: Breaking Down Sexual Barriers for Queer Trans Women”. The title referenced the feminist concept of the glass ceiling – that is, the invisible barriers to promotion at work. Cotton meant underwear. Getting inside women’s knickers was treated as a discrimination issue equivalent to failing to become a CEO.

Really glad to see this part being brought to light.

Floorplan · 15/07/2018 23:41

There was a dreadful article put out by the independent a few hours ago on this. It gets worse it really does

UglyCathKidstonBag · 15/07/2018 23:48

I notice that Indie article potentially misgenders the protestors as “cisgender women” which I believe is the very definition of violence.

Would anyone care to join me in being as petty as the TRAs and complaining about this?

TheBiologicalWoman · 15/07/2018 23:53

I've already complained to Auntie/uncle? BBC so hell yes.

Love the comment that refers to trance.....

TheBiologicalWoman · 15/07/2018 23:58

The BBC defended its bias, but this slides even further along the greasy pole of contempt.

SPOFS · 16/07/2018 00:17

If we do go down the gender road, then I'm fairly sure that most of the "get the l out" protestors would identify as non-binary or gender-fluid.... they should complain...

Thanks for posting this.
I've never been gender conforming.
I don't even understand why women would wear high heels Grin
I think womens fashion is dictated by misogynists.
It isn't comfortable,
I want pockets
and lots of them Grin

TheBiologicalWoman · 16/07/2018 07:51

Thanks Ugly. Will exercise free speech and fingers shortly.

They really are a bunch of CFs.

@Itscurtainsforyou

Thank you for sharing the article, its an important one and I think the first in mainstream press to discuss rather than just label the protesters as 'anti trans':

As Sarah Ditum comments, "It wasn’t just Stonewall that condemned the protesters. Pink News and the Guardian called them “anti-trans”. On Twitter, the protesters were called “terfs” – trans exclusionary radical feminists – an epithet that is frequently accompanied by violent threats and dehumanising rhetoric. Pride apologised for their presence. If the mark of successful direct action is getting your message out, Get the L Out failed. Never mind assessing if their grievance was legitimate – most of the coverage failed even to describe what it was."

Might you consider asking MNHQ to amend the title of the thread to include the title & author of the article please?

It makes it much easier for people to find.

Offred · 16/07/2018 09:06

Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera are only ‘transwomen’ if you include transvestites and drag queens in ‘transwoman’... the things they did were for gay liberation... they were gay men...

We've edited the title now, as requested by the OP.

Thanks both.

Owen Jones from the Guardian, activists and the press reporting factually incorrect information, have to take their share of responsibility for making trans people feel unsafe.

FranceIsHappy · 16/07/2018 10:58

The independent is ignoring samaritan advice. The independent has to take responsibility for reporting in the way they have, they are not reporting facts, they like Owen Jones are after Jeremy Style emotional drama clicks and virtue cookies.

Excellent article by Sarah Ditum.

This lesbian coercion narrative needs to get out there.

This isn’t a frivolous concern. In 2012, Planned Parenthood ran a conference called “Pleasure and Possibilities” which included a workshop on “Overcoming the Cotton Ceiling: Breaking Down Sexual Barriers for Queer Trans Women”.

Tips for men on how to force lesbians to deny their sexual orientation and coerce them into sex.

I'm actually astounded that a public body financed this. It's disgusting.

placemats · 16/07/2018 15:47

I was unaware that Pride and Stonewall were separate entities.

It's a bit like the different factions now in feminism.

However, feminists will always unite in some areas.

The writer of the Independant article above wrote a very biased piece earlier in the year following Lucy Masood's interview on Radio4 Today program in March.

I was unaware that Pride and Stonewall were separate entities.

During the week before London Pride, this article was published in Gay Star News:
'Prides slam Stonewall for failing to support them, demand apology
In a survey of UK Prides, the country’s leading LGBT charity was rated just ‘three out of 10’'

Pride events across Britain are calling for a public apology from leading LGBT charity Stonewall, GSN can exclusively reveal.

They are also demanding the charity changes its ways, with one Pride accusing it of ‘acting like the bloody LGBT police’. Other Prides accuse Stonewall of taking credit for their work but failing to support them.

Gay Star News has obtained a copy of the results of the survey of Pride organisers. The UK Pride Organisers Network will present the report to Stonewall when they meet with the charity in the next few minutes.

And it is likely to make uncomfortable reading for the charity." (continues)

"While some recognize the ‘great work [Stonewall does] for the LGBT+ community’, most of the comments are negative.

One Pride said: ‘They are like a bank rather than a charity. [They] hold vast amounts of cash reserves whilst LGBT need goes unmet and other LGBT charities making a difference on the ground are closing.’

Stonewall had an income of £7,246,000 ($9,530,000, €8,184,000) last year. When their last financial year ended, on 30 September 2017, they held almost £5million ($6.6million, €5.6million) of reserves.

Several of the Prides say Stonewall doesn’t attend their events. When the charity does attend, the Prides claim they haggle for the lowest possible cost for a stall. On average, Prides make around a quarter of their income from selling market stalls.

Others accuse Stonewall of failing to be involved in local LGBTI communities, only visiting their town or city once a year." (continues)

"They want the charity to show ‘humility’. Some indicated Stonewall currently tries to control what Prides do. One called on the organisation to ‘Stop acting like the bloody LGBT Police. They need to “get over it”.’

The UK Pride Organisers Network report makes several recommendations.

They ask Stonewall to share the profits from Primark between Prides and organisations working in Turkey, Myanmar and China.

In addition they want Stonewall chief executive, Ruth Hunt, to say sorry. They want her to acknowledge ‘the disquiet among Pride organisers about their conduct’ and commit to working with Prides in future."

Next week it's the turn of the 18 year old intern who is convinced he's his female avatar or an anime character. Jeez is this what passes for journalism?
I do think I love Scottish Susie - her replies of sanity helped.
