Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

'Gender' should not be enshrined in law

It's a set of toxic stereotypes. Feminists are the only people able accurately to define it.

No transactivist is able to define it.

Noun
lifestylism (uncountable)

(derogatory) The appropriation of something as a lifestyle, without regard to its underlying tenets or meaning.

The great God penis is the ruler of gender

YY

Aided and abetted by The Gender Fairy on his right hand and in his left hand....?

Pratchet · 13/07/2018 11:18

Thanks for all the excellent reasons. I can't really post today.

Buddhism doesn't have a god and it's covered. As are atheists. You can't sack me because of my lack of a god either.

I do think trying to legislate belief is steering very close to 1984 or the Cultural Revolution. Nothing good lies in that direction.

FemWomb · 13/07/2018 11:57

I wouldn't object to adding gender and flat earth into religious beliefs, nobody should be sacked or refused housing/health care because of these benefits.

Offred · 13/07/2018 12:03

Laws re belief tend to also protect the right to not believe because belief can be oppressive in addition to being a basis for discrimination.

If laws were drafted well then it would protect people from oppressive behaviour from genderism...

Offred · 13/07/2018 12:05

And it is a belief... the Christian Right want to impose gendered expectations on others on the basis of sex, the genderists want to impose gendered expectations on others on the basis of identity.

Offred · 13/07/2018 12:08

Hence why GC people, who are usually women due to having lived under the Christian Right approach to gender for eons, are the ones being targeted...

The genderists can respect the Christian Right view because it promotes belief in gender, they simply disagree and want to modify the relationship of gender with sex. GC are a threat to this because they are critical of gender as a whole.

FemWomb · 13/07/2018 12:08

Remind me again which country forces trans of gay people? Is it Iran, what is the religious belief there?

anotherpersona · 13/07/2018 12:08

Gender is superficial lifestylism... it's like being a mod or a rocker; a cat person or a dog person; a tea drinker or a coffee drinker; a BBC viewer or an ITV viewer... it might be an important part of a person's life, but there's nothing substantive or politically meaningful about it in a societal/medical/sporting etc context.

This is the best explanation to offer the person on the street IMO.

BettyDuMonde · 13/07/2018 12:12

If it were classified as a belief/faith, does that mean they’d have to have a ‘gender atheist’ tick box on data collecting forms? 🤓

seafret · 13/07/2018 12:13

Eaxactly. And in a court case it can be easily disproven/ be unable to be proven... all you would have to do is point to a row of women dressed in all manner of styles and you could prove that whilst there might be one perception of cliched stereotype of feminity/ dressing as a woman, not all women adhere to it and certainly not all the time.

This would work wonderfully for a trans woman who was called to prove that they were 'living as the opposite sex' and why it is a dangerous double edge sword; on the one hand the cliche does not extend fullly into reality and changes over time and thus is bunkum, and on the other you can 'dress as a man'/dress in jeans and T shirt and still prove you are transwoman (male) living as a woman.. this is a disingenuous and worrying loophole. Very bad law.

About the only thing you could say that is genuinely divided by sex/gender and upheld by the vast majority of people, is having a beard/moustache (and not shaving it off/ removing it.)

FemWomb · 13/07/2018 12:17

I don't see any UK Christians accepting trans over LGB, which shows out in the 82% lack of support of Self-ID and the big support of LGB in the same YouGov survey.

I don't know if I will be deleted for this. The comments I have heard from various stands of English Christians is along the lines of sadness for anyone with a disgust of their body be it ED, BDor GD or pity along with disgust at the idea of sharing with for those with AGP. Everyone would prefer a LGB child over a trans child that I spoke to, for various reasons.

Has any research gone into Muslim responses v Christian responses to trans in the UK?

BettyDuMonde · 13/07/2018 13:07

There was a post in AIBU the other day that had an interesting response re Muslim communities and trans people. Not seen anything official though.

The Christian Right object to genderism because it undermines the connection between sex and gender which they feel undermines the entire foundation of their own belief in gender - that gender is innate and a sex characteristic and is therefore god given.

Hence copying ‘born this way’ and trying to prove using science the existence of lady brain.

As an astral gendered person my gender is very important to me and is a massive part of who I am.
The part that is not stardust that is.
I'm disappointed that there are no toilets anywhere specific to my gender, but if there were they would have skylights so I could look up at the universe whilst I do my business.
I have suffered discrimination based on my gender, mostly people just tell me to shut up a lot but more importantly my boss said I'm not allowed to wear star patterned tights or sweatshirts with galaxys on to work, this hurts my feeling a lot.
I want my gender to be recognised. I want rights! First off would be a proper telescope not this crappy cheap thing that can only see as far as venus.
Tickets for interstellar travel would also be great.
Also if you could all just worship me as if I were an actual sun that would be great.

Ilikelotsofthinngs · 15/07/2018 00:35

Joking aside I am actually astral gender. Haha.
only read through the a's because jesus Christ has anyone actually read the list of 193 genders
I'm fascinated by space and stars and the wicked mind journey it takes you on when you look up at a clear sky. It's one of my hobbies and I do need a better telescope.
When I can't look at a clear sky I wonder about aliens.
I also wear lots of space themed clothing and jewellery.
Astral gender or general weirdo?
