Just seen the following tweet. I am a teacher. I was a member of the NUT my entire career, before they turned into the NEU (which I’m still in!)
I’m furious. This issue is nothing to do with education, and from my perspective, is eradicating my rights.
I’m not allowed to be political on a public platform because I am a teacher - is there a way to complain about this?? I can’t beleive it. There was never a ballot on supporting GRA. There are so many actual issues facing teachers.

Doing a little more digging, I think this is about respecting trans educators under a wider policy of ensuring education staffs LGBT rights are respected. The signs are a little misleading though, I agree.

argumentativefeminist · 07/07/2018 17:29

The GRA ones shouldn't have been used without a vote, the respect my gender ones could have been worded better.

TellsEveryoneRealFacts · 07/07/2018 17:30

Interesting...as an ex teacher if I was a member of the union i wouldn't be able to see that as they have obviously used a TERFBLOCKER.

I wonder if under the GDPR they are allowed to do that, as an official twitter site.

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/07/2018 17:30

hmm. I've never interacted with this account on twitter, but I'm blocked. They might call themselves LGBTEXEC, but it looks like a personal account rather than an official Union account?

I also thought it was a personal account. So maybe worth checking the official union page to see what they've said about it.

I should add that the tweet was retweeted by the NEU (which is how it popped up in my twitter feed) and the placards have the logo in the corner. I don’t have an issue with the respect my gender ones but the GRA ones hit a nerve ... Its such a controversial piece and I resent my union subs possibly being spent supporting it

Good god, can you imagine if a student accidentally misgendered or even "dead named" a trans teacher? Given how it is apparently "literal violence" Hmm that would probably be the end of their education at that school.

Sometimes we have to remind organizations that there are nine protected categories under the Equality Act and that prioritizing one over all the others is inappropriate.

bigoldscaredycat · 08/07/2018 07:35

I’ve noticed organisations and celebrities and politicians have been falling over themselves this year to support Pride for virtue points.

Tackytriceratops · 08/07/2018 08:00

Kiri Tunks is GC though - I wonder if this is a personal account?

Tackytriceratops · 08/07/2018 08:02

Very confusing. I'm cross if this is the route they're going in as it's not got my backing.

crayoladreamz · 08/07/2018 08:06

I’m blocked from their tweets. Don’t think I’ve ever come
Across them before tho so don’t know what I’ve done to upset them.

ShotsFired · 08/07/2018 13:50

Me too. My FB newsfeed has been rammed with dozens of sponsored (i.e. paid-for) posts by institutions I am not even connected with, all bigging up themselves for being so right-on and massively woke. It is a handy way to cross them off a mental list of who not to give my custom to though.

qumquat · 08/07/2018 14:19

On the plus side Kiri Tunks has not been prevented from being open with her gender critical views. But she did lose the debate at conference and the NEU is officially in favour of self-id. Crazy.

Pratchet · 08/07/2018 14:48

My union has erased sex from its list of characteristics to be protected against hatred and discrimination.

OiWhoTookTheGoodNames · 08/07/2018 16:17

I've just been going around the teacher unions looking to rejoin one (I'm the lone figure trying to get back IN to teaching) - and I'd noticed NEU had gone Pride TTTTTTTTTTTTT (oh and a little bit of LGB) bonkers on twitter.

qumquat · 09/07/2018 18:13

I think at least the NEU has Kiri Tunks as president. She has been openly and eloquently gender critical, as well as championing their campaign to end sexism in schools. She's what keeps me in the NEU
