Trans actors are assuming Scarlet Johansson's gender identity

There's been a huge outcry regarding Scarlet Johansson playing a woman who has been retroactively transed (because that is apparently okay); the issue is that the character she will be playing is being understood as a transman, and so trans activists, including many trans actors, have said SJ should not play this part, and that only a trans person should play the role. The thing is they want to play all sorts of roles, so they want all the trans roles but others too. That is the first double standard. The second is that they are all assuming her gender identity, meaning either that they are basing this on her appearance or they think that she doesn't have the right to privacy regarding gender identity that trans people claim and thus because she hasn't come out as trans that means that she isn't.

All kinds of knots going on there....

They are retroactively 'transing' the character because they can't bear the idea that someone pretended to be something they are not in order to gain advantage.

She sounds as trans as (my favourite film Wink) Yentl

Papa can you hear me?

Saw this and well, you know...

"Not only do you play us and steal our narrative and our opportunity but you pat yourselves on the back with trophies and accolades for mimicking what we have lived,” added Ms. Lysette, who is a transgender woman and plays one on the TV series “Transparent,” about a character who comes out as transgender.

As well as the obvious irony, in acting Trace Lysette recently played a non-trans woman character in Transparent..... must be different somehow???

I expect Lysette wold be quite happy to accept an Oscar for Best Actress..

I saw this in a title on FB and just laughed. They are objecting to a woman playing a woman who played a man. So the film is about someone pretending to be something they’re not but that can’t be portrayed by someone pretending to be something they’re not. Confused huh??

What about Shakespearean actors?
Who would be allowed to play Rosalind in As You Like It under these new rules?
Now that's a headfuck!!! Grin

This colonisation of butch identities and the attendant historical revisionism by trans people needs to stop. In the context of that time, calling yourself mister and getting around in blokes clothes - that makes you a butch lesbian.

I thought transpeople felt pursecuted because they are often portrayed as villains, or is a brothel-keeper a romantic figure nowadays?

Transgender advocates have been forcibly transitioning notable female historical figures for years. IIRC they started with the Maid of Orleans because no woman could do what she did so she had to be transgender.
All the famous Lesbians from history have been forcibly transitioned posthumously.
There have been times in the past when men erased women from recorded history. We are living through one of those times.
You may have heard of the Junius or Junia question from the Bible.
Dale Spender wrote a book some years back called Women of Ideas, and What Men Have Done to Them that tells of the tactics men use to erase women. At the moment I think Scotland has them all beat for pure cheek.

I can't say I'm terribly sympathetic to either Johansson or Sanders (the Director) as they made Ghost in the Shell together, which not only whitewashed the main role but also fucked with her character turning a unique and powerful Japanese story into a very standard American movie (my dh and dd are fans of the Japanese original anime and manga and were very pissed off).

The casting on this one is odd - whether Gill was a butch lesbian or a transman she didn't look even remotely like Johansson, in photographs Gill is short, overweight and not at all attractive, none of which can be remotely applied to Johansson.

Googling I can only find this obituary it seems that she was a bit of an enigma and that seems to be pretty much all the available information about Gill (online at least) so difficult to judge if this is retrospective transing of a butch lesbian or not.

Charlize Theron didn’t look a whole bunch like Aileen Wornous either. Quite the transformation.

YY Feline. Lesbians are no longer entitled to their own history. It’s very sinister.

Pot, I'd like you to meet Kettle. The two of you will get along great as you have a lot in common.
