HELP - card cloned possibly linked to Crowd funder

Hi namechanged

But I’m a long time lurker, sporadic poster.

I donated to the transgendertrend crowdfunder and since then I’ve got four transactions which are not mine on the card. They appear to originate from the same postcode as the crowdfunder.

It’s been used at deliveroo and fucking Airbnb!!! Has anyone else had problems?

Thanks for the reminder to donate

WiltedDaffs · 27/06/2018 10:19

I’ve recently been sent a new card, phoned bank as I hadn’t lost mine and it wasn’t expiring soon. They said they send new ones if they think a card has been used in a dodgy ATM or website.

I thought this a bit odd as this card is usually only used for my food shopping and petrol. I rarely use it for anything else and it’s extremely rare for me to put this one in an ATM.

So I looked through my bank statement and yep only used it for big, well known companies...paying for food shopping/petrol/holiday. But I also spot Currys. I did use it in a Currys store a few months ago and last week they announced 5.8million card details had been taken from their card processing system being hacked. So I think that’s the most likely reason the bank have sent me a new card.

So there’s many different ways card details can get stolen and it could be from a big company and/or an in person transaction. Not sure why postcodes would match, only time I’ve seen a location on my statement it’s usually a head office or store location where I used the card. Crowdfunder/deliveroo/Airbnb don’t have any stores and there head offices are in different places.

My credit card was replaced last month after the card company picked up fraudulent use. It must have been pretty obvious to them because they didn't check the transaction with me. I haven't got a clue how the fraudsters got hold of the details but the credit card co were on top of it. I did wonder if it had anything to do with you-know-what but I think that is me being paranoid.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 27/06/2018 13:22

I donated. Checked my account. All good and proper. No reasons for others to not donate.

boatyardblues · 27/06/2018 20:28

Can I ask which is the most efficient way of giving? If Crowdfunder take a bigger cut than Paypal, I’ll just donate via the FPFW site.

boatyardblues · 27/06/2018 20:33

OK, got off my arse and googled. Crowdfunder charges 8%. Paypal is 1.4% + 20p per transaction for non-profits. I know the Crowdfunder sends a public signal, but I want FPFW to get more of my money so I’ll be donating direct.

TheRollingCrone · 27/06/2018 20:38

Oh I donated via a tablet with a cc, no problems here.

sleep5 · 27/06/2018 20:45

there are so many ways for a credit card to be cloned that the banks can't always figure it out. Your phone/laptop could have been attacked and had key logging or similar software installed. A website that you've made payments on could have been hacked. If you've used a public Wi-fi network to make payments, someone could have been watching you.

Your bank will investigate and match the fraudulent transactions with those made on other's accounts and hopefully track the source. But the main thing is that the credit card company have to return the money to you (unless they can prove you were involved in the fraud).

scotsheather · 27/06/2018 20:48

So a poster comes on MN with a serious problem and is greeted with suspicion. Whether real or not, THAT will do the TRAs job for them.

LastTrainEast · 27/06/2018 20:51

I've had a card used online which ought to be impossible since it was new and no one had yet seen the number on the back. They won't let ME order stuff without the number on the back so how can other people?

Anyway I've made another donation now I've been reminded. Every little helps.

LastTrainEast · 27/06/2018 20:58

scotsfeather I know what you mean, but you can see how it sounded.
I'm quite sure OP is genuine, but still.

Thing is when it happens to you it makes you panicky and you're casting around for the cause. I've had it twice now and never did find out how and I'm really careful.

InfiniteSheldon · 27/06/2018 21:03

Thankyou for the reminder DH hadn't donated and I've reminded my sisters too keep up the good work

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/06/2018 21:11

Not bought anything at Ticketmaster recently OP?

enoughisenough12 · 27/06/2018 21:14

I was just coming on here to mention the Ticketmaster issue having just received a warning email from them .

ArseDiamonds · 27/06/2018 21:29

Fortunately scotsheather as I’m a long term user/lurker even though I don’t post a lot I haven’t taken offence. The excellent, informative posts that certain posters have made over a long period of time far outweigh the fact that they have been slightly rude to me on here.

I never knew that crowd funder took a cut. Blush I donated direct in a fit of rage when the crowd funder was taken down and donated again on the crowd funder during the final push on Twitter.

I’ve never bought anything from ticket master. I wonder if they share the same processor with crowd funder? A pp said lots of companies share the same processor?

I’m glad no-one else has had problems, I do feel less targeted now. One of my reasons for wanting to know if anyone else was affected was if it had been a deliberate hack I was going to insist the police took a statement about targeted harassment, never mind the money (which there won’t be a problem getting back)

If anyone was compelled to donate to FPFW by thinking I was a troll, then that’s just a silver lining Smile

So is there a consensus on where I should donate? Direct or crowd funder?

Horrendous, dreadful, terrible - shock horror. Don't you fret OP. I'll donate on your behalf.
