As predicted, Twitter has decided that the transman actress was excellent 'brave and beautiful'and every one else transphobic for not accepting at face value this new trans character

I watch Emmerdale. But I reached peak Trans last night and decided to switch off - forever.

Howyoualldoworkme · 26/06/2018 10:17

Ha! Emmerdale just peak transed my 82 year old mother.

SPOFS · 26/06/2018 10:30

Oh wow, I just searched this on Twitter, the public are not happy... in fact, they seem ahead of us in terms of peak trans! Most of them seem way passed that!

ChiefClerkDrumknott · 26/06/2018 10:30

I don't watch Emmerdale - would anyone mind giving a quick run down of what happened please?

Serfisafleur · 26/06/2018 10:35

What's happened in Emmerdale?

Yambabe · 26/06/2018 10:36

WTF? FWIW I am a long-term watcher and thought that the scenes were well-played on both sides.

We saw a young person "come out" to their mum and that mum react with anger and hostility NOT because the person was trans but because they had lied for several years and not been there whilst the family went through crisis after crisis.

No transphobia. No bravery either. Ash (who plays Matty) IS a good actor, but so is Natalie (who plays Moira).

Will be interesting to see how they play it, and I'm glad they found a trans actor to play the part - I think Corrie casting a woman to play Hayley and that character being what it was has actually coloured a lot of people's views of what it meant to be trans.

I suspect we will see lots of tears and shouting on both sides but eventually everyone will come round and accept. Which I suspect is very much what happens to most people in real life too.

Strange, I just trawled back through a few hours worth of the Emmerdale hashtag and the only overly negative comments I've seen so far are from someone who's obviously, from his username, an extreme right-winger.

SPOFS · 26/06/2018 11:43

@MillyTheKid

I searched 'emmerdale' and 'trans' and found mainly negative comments. It really shows how little we get away with here.

MillyTheKid · 26/06/2018 11:52

Just searched using Emmerdale and trans as suggested. Still seem mainly positive unless you count the likes of 'White Male and Proud' types. A few negative comments, some about how they handled the storyline which doesn't really count as negative towards trans people.

SPOFS · 26/06/2018 11:55

That's odd. Then again, I'm on Terfblocker, so I'm probably blocked by a lot of people that would post positively on this story.

(Not that I think the storyline is negative! I think it's a good idea, very topical!)

I just think I'm getting rather tired of practically everything in all the soaps being issue based. I've been watching old Corrie on ITV3. The writing is streets ahead and relies on characters not situations.

Genuine question. Is Matty being played by someone who has transitioned IRL or a man?

It cheesed me off that Haley Cropper was played by a woman.

Yambabe · 26/06/2018 20:01

The actor playing Matty is trans.

Yambabe · 26/06/2018 20:05

It's also really hard to answer that without breaking the new talk guidelines!

alarmedagain · 27/06/2018 02:13

Its strange, I was only just thinking about transpeople in soaps. I think Corrie could do a good one where a male sex offender does terrible things then identifies as a woman and demands to be given female access and a job making knickers or something. Just to pick another story from the news.
