How do I explain to my daughter...

UnderTheDesk · 23/06/2018 22:41

...why I’m wearing a bra?

My daughter is two. She likes to watch me get dressed, the tiny weirdo. She has just learned the words «my bra». Obviously, mummy wears one and she doesn’t.

But why does mummy wear a bra? Mummy wears a c or d cup, so has relatively small breasts that don’t really need support unless mummy is running.
Why does Mummywear a bra? Because it would be considered indecent forMummy to have her boobs be free-range under her T-shirt, even though it’s totally fine for daddy to do that.
Why does Mummy wear a bra? Does anyone have an actual good answer to this?

A c or a d cup is not small, surely?

I think the simple answer would be to stop wearing a bra if you feel you don't need to. And then the question disappears.

I wear one for support, which is straightforward enough to explain if my children ask.

CardsforKittens · 23/06/2018 22:49

Is mummy more comfortable with a bra on? Might be the easiest answer if you are.

I think if it’s comfier, tell her that.

And if it’s not, you could stop wearing it if you wanted. I’ve just spent a week bra-less (blocked ducts, still breastfeeding, just needed to be comfy), and I honestly don’t think anyone even noticed.

Kettlepotblackagain · 23/06/2018 22:52

You came on a feminist board at eleven o clock at night to ask about bras?

Terfulike · 23/06/2018 22:57

Absolutely. I'm a D and I feel extremely uncomfortable without a bra for support.
Whats a tie for? Try explaining that.
Bit uncomfortable about "tiny wierdo" comment: if you are a mother you would know that two year olds watch everything.

Its mainly for comfort reasons for me. Im DD and they get in the way, move around awkwardly and generally just feel uncomfortable braless. And boob sweat Blush
Mine are also saggy after 3 kids and ageing so they look better in a bra under certain items of clothes. I wouldnt wear one if I didnt have these issues.
If my 2 year old asked, I would just tell them the truth.

Candyflip · 23/06/2018 23:32

Do you need to wear a bra if your breasts are small? I am more comfortable wearing one but would not if I had smaller breasts.

UnderTheDesk · 24/06/2018 07:23

Grin Blush Sorry guys. Was a bit pissed and taking off my bra was suddenly the best thing ever, which sparked a big philosophical debate in my drunken brain. Will keep thoughts to myself after too much wine in future.

"the tiny weirdo" Hmm

Dinosaurchicken · 24/06/2018 10:38

I rarely wear one but I am concerned that if I am at work someone might ask me to wear one. Can they actually insist ? Or would it be a polite request ?

Verbena87 · 24/06/2018 11:35

I can’t imagine it’s any of their business to request or insist. I’d stick to tops that aren’t too skin-tight or low cut (but that’s normal for workwear anyway) and I doubt anyone will notice.

BOO32 · 24/06/2018 13:19

I don't know where this idea has come from that not wearing a bra is considered indecent. As a previous poster said bras used to just be thin material so outline of nipples could still be seen and was no big deal.

As someone with very tiny breasts post-breast feeding I haven't owned one for years. I wear a vest or crop top most of the time as underwear. Or no underwear. I'd be gobsmacked if anyone commented on this.

Wakame · 24/06/2018 14:56

"Men don't wear them because they don't have breasts."

I guess that makes me a woman after all :-)

Beamur · 24/06/2018 14:58

Well, why do you wear a bra? Tell her that.

Sevendown · 24/06/2018 15:00

I wouldn’t wear a bra unless it was to get them out of my way!

To hell with what anyone else thinks is indecent!

feska5 · 24/06/2018 15:02

She’s two! Surely she doesn’t keep asking why you wear a bra. Just say it’s more comfortable and when she’s a bit more grown up she might wear a bra.
