I know it's hard to tell how mixed up you feel
Hoping what you need is behind every door
Each time you get hurt, I don't want you to change
Because everyone has hopes, you're human after all
The feeling sometimes, wishing you were someone else
Feeling as though you never belong
This feeling is not sadness, this feeling is not joy
I truly understand. Please, don't cry now

Please don't go, I want you to stay
I'm begging you please, please don't leave here
I don't want you to hate
For all the hurt that you feel
The world is just illusion, trying to change you

And our Youth
Our youth
Are being seduced
By the greedy hands of politics
And half truths

The beaten generation
The beaten generation
Reared on a diet
Of prejudice and misinformation

Oh, FloralBunting got to quote Jabberwocky before me.

Jabberwocky www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/42916/jabberwocky

Never mind, The Owl and The Pussy Cat will be good.

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat
BY EDWARD LEAR www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43188/the-owl-and-the-pussy-cat
I
The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy! O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"

I rest my case m'lud.

Your vanity is crazy, sweet and fair girl. Do
you believe that Love will let your youth go by
without your devoting yourself to the pleasures
of love which distribute things in many cases:
sometimes joy, sometimes pain?

This was not your desire, but Love certainly
does not agree. I tell you that your young and
joyful heart must feel the arrow of Love which
will send you thoughts of desire in many
different ways, sometimes in joy, sometimes in
pain.

And if you're forced, whether you like it or
not, to accept a frank, sweet glance, without
waiting too long, what's the use of being
so slow and langorous? I send you sighs,
more than thirty, some in joy, some in pain.

Little sweetheart, who sings so well, do you
think you can escape from the happy times that
are approaching, sometimes joyful, sometimes painful?

(Not the best translation of Christine de Pizan, but I couldnt' find the one I wanted)

TerfsUp · 21/06/2018 16:02

Alice, who the fuck is Alice?

I dunno. Alice doesn't live here anymore.

But he does have a nice restaurant. You can be anything you want at Alice's restaurant.

TerfsUp · 21/06/2018 16:02

OTOH, I have always liked Alice Cooper.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 21/06/2018 17:17

"Killer" by Alice Cooper was one of the first albums I ever owned. I bought it for , a track that expressed my contempt and rejection of my pretentious girls school.

My overt rebellion got me expelled, but not before the school had demanded that I undergo a virginity test. My parents reacted with outrage, and the school rescinded my expulsion when they saw my exam results.

My folks took me all round the country to various schools until we found a good match. It was a boys.public school that was taking a very small number of girls for A levels. They weren't phased by my anger or rejection of ladylike behaviour. They were used to boys, who are often really bolshy, and I no longer stuck out. I had a great two years there.

So farewell then plagiaristic pachyderm.

Your trolling was mildly tedious while it lasted

But now it's gone and unlamented.

Sciencelogic · 21/06/2018 17:46

Wow
Prawn, a virginity test?
That's a tad undignified for the school, no wonder you rebelled.
What were they expecting?
Glad your parents supported you. Flowers

My eldest calls Transactivism "The gospel according to Shania Twain"

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 21/06/2018 18:27

ScienceLogic, I was sexually active and had told a couple of friends. Someone gossiped and the school decided that a medical examination was an acceptable proposal. This was after a one to one interview in which my headmistress ranted and raged at me for the whole lunch break. Spittle was hitting me in the face. It was bizarre.

My parents made threatening noises. My dad was a very well regarded GP which helped. Talked about slander. The school backed off.

When I think about the damage sexism has done to me over most of my life, I find it very difficult to understand why anyone would say we no longer need feminism.

RubyShooFan · 21/06/2018 18:31

OMG Prawn which country and which decade? That’s fucking horrific!?! I was under the impression you couldn’t examine genitals without consent even if you suspected FGM.

We were singing that in the office recently. Someone called lola was coming in for a meeting. Then it morphed into 'her name was lola, she was a showgirl'.
