Actually no.... not really.

But has anyone else noticed the frequency with which men will come on to post about mostly female interests to dispense their pearls of manly wisdom?

I'm thinking of posts on subjects such as fashion or beauty. I don't really post there, but on The Guardian beauty discussions you'll invariably see something along the lines of "Man here. I just want to say that we straight men really don't like make-up. You should just be yourselves! Don't get conned by the beauty industry ladies!" As if women are too thick to make their own informed choices and as if they were wearing make-up - or whatever - purely to gain male approval.

Have to say it annoys me no end. Such entitlement. I mean, women don't go on to football threads and tell them it's all a waste of time and they should focus on something more constructive, do we?

Whenever I see this happen I always imagine a little trumpet fanfare in my head followed by the announcement, "A Man has arrived"

IcedPurple · 19/06/2018 17:23

Lol! And when you call them out they invariably get super snotty "God. I thought you might just like to get a male perspective on this. That's all."

Flounces.

Grin

Even Nigels are guilty.

AnotherQuoll · 19/06/2018 17:40

Yep. And every one of them thinks they're some kind of heroic pioneer. The first Man to stake a claim by posting his very own topic in the feminist forum. I can almost picture then planting a little penis flag in the thread title.

IcedPurple · 19/06/2018 17:49

That's the funny thing! They think they're doing us wimminz an enormous favour by descending to the girlie discussions to grant us the honour of their male presence.

But like I said above, women just don't do it in reverse, do we? It's a man thing.

CardsforKittens · 19/06/2018 17:52

If I want a man's opinion I'll read his entrails ask for it.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 19/06/2018 18:11

I know men with feminist values. They wouldn't think it was their place to plonk their manly opinion into a discussion between women. It's about respect.

The recent poster, John, annoyed some women but, to be fair, he had put in a lot of effort presenting a feminist perspective on trans movement on a mostly male website. I think he hadn't understood how his well meaning advice came across to the sex which is frequently told not to trouble our pretty heads.

UpstartCrow
I thought of that image as soon as I saw the title of this thread!

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/06/2018 18:31

When it's on threads like beauty or fashion, what they mean is they're giving their perspective which they imagine is important and significant.

IcedPurple · 19/06/2018 18:34

It's worse than that.

They think women are little fools, brainwashed by the fashion and beauty industry into parting with their hard-earned cash for lotions, potions and high-heels... when of course men, the real experts, prefer Birkinstock wearing women with ponytails and scrubbed faces.

Because of course they do. All the evidence from ladz magz and trophy wives proves that men don't like conventionally hot women, doesn't it?

It wasn't his opinion that was the problem, was it? It was that he actually thought his opinion was worth 10x the length (and 10x our time to read) of the average post around here and it didn't even occur to him to say hi, make some friends, and gain some trust before making lordly pronouncements.

I don't doubt he meant well, but his praxis certainly could have done with some pruning of the male socialised entitlement to an (appreciative) audience!

I would say awww bless but I failed female socialisation, so I won't bother. Wink

Where do you think my username came from? (‘As a professional man...’ thread)

Agerbilatemycardigan · 19/06/2018 18:40

Quite like this classic..

Man Here!
UpstartCrow · 19/06/2018 18:40

That was a classic. I miss that thread.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 19/06/2018 18:59

Of course the other classic is when 250 posts into a heated debate on AIBU someone says 'I just asked DH and he says...' Grin

thebewilderness · 19/06/2018 19:18

Women do sometimes do it for a lark, the way Man Friday shows up to flip the script.
It is usually really funny until it isn't.

invisibleoldwoman · 19/06/2018 19:23

CardsForKittens. 😂🤣😂🤣

thebewilderness · 19/06/2018 19:25

It is pretty obvious on the fashion and beauty issues that men view these magazines and blogs and advertisements as grooming women on how better to please men.
Perhaps it is the fact that men own all the women's magazines and most of the fashion and cosmetics houses that gives credence to their beliefs.

IcedPurple · 19/06/2018 19:38

It is pretty obvious on the fashion and beauty issues that men view these magazines and blogs and advertisements as grooming women on how better to please men.

And of course if women respond by saying that other women generally pay much more attention to such things than men do, they'll say that that's because we're so busy 'competing' for men and their attention.

So whatever way you cut it, it's all about the menz.

ChickenMe · 19/06/2018 20:27

Reminds me of that bloody Meghan Trainor song

"Boys like a little more booty to hold at night"

Not all of us exist to please men.

SpareRibFem · 19/06/2018 21:53

Grin I only came into this thread to say oh Lordy here's another one. I was guilty of thinking it was worth trying to educate the first two I saw in FWR until I realised they all followed the same pattern Blush

Always makes me think of this :-
