any thoughts? Is left support for modern trans ideology allied to marxist theory?

Firstly, I would define my politics as socialist, so let me get that out of the way.

This is just a thought I am throwing out there. I wonder if the surprisingly vociferous support that the modern left (I.e. those who have no connection to or understanding of life of working classes) have for the modern trans movement (as opposed to that group of individuals who have quietly transitioned in the past and for whom I have sympathy) and its eagerness to transition very young children is connected to marxist theory and its disdain for the family unit.

Genuine question. Sorry if poorly expressed - am not an academic. Happy to be corrected so no angry responses thanks. X

Sorry never responded to Jeremy thing. Don't everybody shout me down but I think Jeremy's problem is he's just a bit thick, a good old fashioned 'tim nice but dim'. No way would he be in this position if he wasn't a posh boy with money. Why this adulation for someone whose views have never modulated like that's a positive trait rather than a sign of lack of engagement with other people and immaturity.

There's post Marxism which draws on post structuralism (which is within post modernity) and Marxism. I haven't the time to explain more but I thought I'd throw in the term as something worth googling to help with understanding it.

Post structuralism and post Marxism do still engage with class and power analysis. Albeit they'd see it as more complex and fluid than orthodox Marxism. A lot of the post modern wiffle waffle seems to be a very superficial understanding of post structuralism/Marxism. But it's what predominates.

Many thanks for clarifying, Norther.

(That's the definition I use, too. And agree entirely with your stance. Smile)

You're so right to ask for clarification. A lot of times I've chatted to people thinking we were on the same wavelength only to be pulled up short when I realise that although they agree sex can't be changed they unfortunately then start using phrases like girly girl to describe their daughter. Really hard not to scream when they say that.

Norther, yes, I wouldn't be surprised. I haven't paid close attention to him as a person.

When I heard an actual socialist was being elected leader of the labour party I just couldn't believe it and worried about the onslaught they'd face from press and party. I've kind of watched the whole thing through my fingers, from a distance coz I had my heart broken enough during the 2010 and 2015 elections (I think I mentioned upthread I'm basically a wimp).

What a disappointment. Anyway, glad your migraine is clearing up.

I don’t think transgender support is particularly Marxist, no.
Besides, surely most feminists are also deeply critical of the institution of the private family and its gendered roles? It is after all what has contributed to female oppression over the centuries.
