Women in prison punished for not wearing bra

Francis Crook of Howard League has tweeted "Young woman in prison was punished and put on the basic regime because she didn’t wear a bra. Staff told her she was indecent. @TheHowardLeague is acting for her."

More rediculous policing of women's clothing choices

Unbelievable.

icedtea · 16/06/2018 11:55

This is so wrong. As long as she was wearing a top of some kind she is decent - especially in an all woman environment.

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/06/2018 12:30

Wtf? Wearing a top is all that's necessary, wearing a bra or not is nothing to do with "decency" unless you think that the shape of women's bodies is inherently indecent.

Weezol · 16/06/2018 12:48

WTF? How is this possibly acceptable?

Typeractive · 16/06/2018 12:50

I was told the other day by someone who visits prisons as a volunteer that she would be denied entry if she didn't wear a bra.

I don't understand it.

Weezol · 16/06/2018 12:55

Curiouser and curiouser. I have only visited men's prisons and there were zero dress guidelines for visitors.

What in earth has wearing a bra got to do with anything? I assume they aren't in chiffon tops?

Branleuse · 16/06/2018 13:07

thats so bizarre

starcrossedseahorse · 16/06/2018 13:16

Was this a woman or a 'woman' with post surgery breasts?

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/06/2018 13:18

It doesn't matter, does it, @starcrossedseahorse ?

AntiqueOlive · 16/06/2018 13:30

Crikey.

I must be indecent every day.

starcrossedseahorse · 16/06/2018 13:37

AB no it doesn't matter. I was just wondering aloud.

JurassicBark · 16/06/2018 13:45

Weird coincidence. I have just been wondering about whether it is acceptable in our culture (London, UK) for women to go out without a bra on. I'm really struggling with bruising and possibly fractured ribs and it's so uncomfortable to wear one right now. I had to go out and pick up some things from the supermarket but in the end decided to put one on.

MipMipMip · 16/06/2018 14:14

Yet more ridulous policing of women's bodies. It's convention to say breast should be covered up, nothing more. And it sounds as if they were any way by her top!

Angry
Gammeldragz · 16/06/2018 14:16

God forbid anyone gets the hint of a nipple... The horror!

Typeractive · 16/06/2018 14:19

Same, Weezol. I've only only ever visited men's prisons, and no one has ever said anything about needing to wear a bra.

Andthenshesaid · 16/06/2018 14:23

I own one bra which I wear to work in the summer. Don’t bother in winter as I’m in thicker clothes and my nipples are very prominent. I’m not bothered by it, strangely it’s mostly other women who I find don’t like it

Weezol · 18/06/2018 16:30

Do women in prison have and recourse in situations this batshit?

UpstartCrow · 18/06/2018 16:32

Can she afford a bra? I hope they are not punishing her for not being able to afford underwear.
