Unisex

Anyone remember this word? Where has it gone? It seems now to have become the awful 'gender neutral' - another case of language being appropriated in the same was as local councils now use gender instead of sex? Gender neutral is a meaningless phrase to me whereas I knew where I was with old fashioned unisex!

I begin to wonder how long this campaign to erase us has been going on...it began with language and it this is why we must battle to retain the woman to mean adult human female and nothing else.

I always use unisex as a word. I refuse to say gender neutral. Gender is not a measurable or definable state of being, so you cannot gender a space.

Keep using clear language, in a polite and calm way. That’s how we will win this. Cool heads, logical argument, total determination.

I also use "unisex". "Gender neutral" is meaningless newspeak. Very few things are gender (sex) neutral, because we live in a sexist world.

BettyDuMonde · 15/06/2018 09:44

Gender neutral makes me think ‘beige’.

It’s like a rented house with magnolia walls and a brown carpet.

I’m certainly not moving in.

‘Unisex’ is like unicorn and sex mashed together and it makes me think of David Bowie and maybe Annika Rice in her jumpsuit era.

Shall we make a collective conscious effort to bring it back into use?

Ereshkigal · 15/06/2018 09:54

Yes let's do that. It's a good sensible word.

starcrossedseahorse · 15/06/2018 09:55

Absolutely I think we should. It means something to most people whereas gender neutral is a nonsense.

I agree completely. Back to unisex!

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 15/06/2018 14:31

Another assenting voice. Unisex it is.

misscockerspaniel · 15/06/2018 15:06

Gender neutral is especially stupid when applied to urinals.

RatRolyPoly · 15/06/2018 15:09

I got told off for using "unisex" and told I had to use "mixed sex", which I now do on here so as not to cause offence.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 15/06/2018 15:13

I always say unisex. I dont think i have once ever said gender neutral or even gender to replace unisex/sex. Unless its to actually talk about whats happening. They are both jolly fine words and everyone knows what they mean

loveyouradvice · 15/06/2018 15:21

Unisex - yes please!

ChickenMe · 15/06/2018 16:52

Yep - refuse to use gender neutral. Always try to use unisex and correct others who don't realise. Gender doesn't actually exist.

Pratchet · 15/06/2018 17:08

Mixed sex is my preference

fascinated · 15/06/2018 17:15

Unisex is a lovely green pair of dungarees that could be spotted by any Rainbow presenter 🤩 Love it!

skyhighliver · 15/06/2018 18:03

I'm over 40 so it's still unisex for me. I can't seem to say 'gender neutral' in my normal tone of voice, it just sounds silly.

bandplaysdixie · 15/06/2018 21:44

"Mixed sex" just sounds like a terrible experience in bed to me Grin

Tiggerzz · 15/06/2018 21:46

I remember wearing unisex clothes when I was little!

Pratchet · 15/06/2018 22:30

lol Dixie it's like a review you are right
'How was the sex? '
'Meh - pretty mixed tbh'
