This is just getting flipping ridiculous now. Munroe has made one very recent, very shoddy documentary.

Thrilled to be opening the @BFI #WomanWithAMovieCamera Summit to talk about feminism, power and culture.

Very pleased the petition has reached 1,089 signatures in just one daylight day which is above the 1k target.

I didn't see this thread straight away after checking back. Had real anxiety that it had been deleted! Quite out of character. Glad to see it's still here.

gendercritter · 14/06/2018 20:17

Yes the petition has done so well

Blueisland · 14/06/2018 20:30

Has the BFI responded?

HermioneWeasley · 14/06/2018 20:33

They can fuck right off. Women are never asked to speak for trans women, but there have been multiple examples where they’ve been given roles speaking for women.

Munroe isn’t even in film. It’s fucking ridiculous

pachyderm · 14/06/2018 21:16

Women are already extremely under-represented in film. Someone should quote this at the BFI.

Or this diagram.

What the fuck does MB know about any of this? Apart from anything, MB seems to hate women. I see Lionel Shriver was kicked off a literary panel for her mockery of the liberal left's obsession with diversity. Whereas MB posted homophobic and sexist tweets a while back and is rewarded. What could possibly be different about these two people? Hmm

Agerbilatemycardigan · 14/06/2018 21:20

Just checked the petition and it's reached 1131 signatures in just over 24 hours.

Ardant · 14/06/2018 21:26

They're "woke". They won't respond positively. They'll think people who object are bigots, and that this is good advertising.

I'd bet that the BFI is (like the movie and film industry) very male-dominated.

SuitedandBooted · 14/06/2018 21:29

Hmm. I think the BFI need to be more discerning.

I signed the petition. I think the words “disgraceful”, “insulting” and “appallingly ill-judged” might have been included in my comments. This kind of crap makes my blood boil.

This is a truly crass booking. Shock
Zero eligibility or credibility as a keynote speaker about being a woman in the UK film industry.

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 15/06/2018 00:05

So happy to see many people have signed already and that the responses on twitter are in our favour.

After everything thats happened in the last day or so, its given me a little bit more hope. More people are seeing whats happening and speaking up #longmayitcontinue

Julia Hartley-Brewer (tweet)

"The British Film Institute @BFI is hosting an event on Sat to celebrate women in films #WomanWithAMovieCamera. Their keynote speaker is trans activist @MunroeBergdorf. Apparently it’s easier for a woman to get into movies if she was born a man. Who knew?"

thornyhousewife · 15/06/2018 06:37

I've signed the petition.

"This appointment was extremely ill conceived and exposes the BFI as a weak and worthy hand-wringer with no authentic commitment to women. I have reconsidered my membership accordingly."

What a shame.

Shock Women, know your place! An excellent example of unwarranted privilege.

Lottapianos · 15/06/2018 07:50

'Apparently it’s easier for a woman to get into movies if she was born a man. Who knew?"'

Julia Hartley Brewer is usually no feminist ally but she clearly understands this issue and is determined to have her voice heard. Good for her

NotTerfNorCis · 15/06/2018 08:06

It seems the norm in patriarchal cultures, from Medieval England to modern Saudi Arabia with its all-male 'Girls' Council', to use men disguised as women to represent women. We are slowly returning to that.

terryleather · 15/06/2018 08:37

Signed.
The BFI are trolling women with this bs.
