Apparently, these were the names chosen and advertised for beers, it makes me terribly sad and angry that this is still happening. www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-09/craft-beer-makers-vale-bru-apologise-for-sexist-labels/9852970 and the initial non-apology says it all.

This gives more information- including :'

(a) they have racist names too;
(b) they aren't actually a craft brewer- they merely re-bottle and re-label another brewer's beer;
(c) they don't know much about beer ("Indian" pale ale)

‘All your friends have had her’ - ads for 'moist' Easy Blonde and Filthy Brunette beers spark outrage in SA

When I was visiting a couple of years ago I saw a "nice rack" advert for meat.

Grim.

Apparently women were not even allowed to drink in bars in Brisbane in the 60s, overturned by these brave ladies:
www.abc.net.au/news/2015-03-27/merle-thornton-revisits-regatta-hotel-50-years-after-protest/6355004

TenuedeNimes · 09/06/2018 14:47

What a pathetic non-apology they gave. Just made it worse.

TenuedeNimes · 09/06/2018 14:50

Xxx while that’s both interesting and outrageous, bear in mind that
Brisbane isn’t in South Africa
Wink

IamXXHearMeRoar · 09/06/2018 14:52

Haha missed that, too busy catching the au news link!

Clarioncall · 09/06/2018 14:53

Lass, I am horrified at the links that show the true depths of their racism and misogyny.

OP posts:
IamXXHearMeRoar · 09/06/2018 14:54

The apology just isn't, it's as if they have no PR advice at all.

Clarioncall · 09/06/2018 14:55

Wait, what Brisbane isn't in SA? Who says geography is important?

OP posts:
LassWiADelicateAir · 09/06/2018 15:04

Lass, I am horrified at the links that show the true depths of their racism and misogyny

Doesn't it just? Complete with the obligatory but "we are the good guys" protestations.

And even better that it was captured by Business Insider so they have no scope for complaining they are being got at.

Clarioncall · 09/06/2018 15:11

Thank you for sharing the Business Insider link even though it made me feel sick.

Apologies to IAMXX , if I made assumptions.

OP posts:
IamXXHearMeRoar · 09/06/2018 15:24

No Clarion I made the assumption, saw the au news link and assumed au beer company. In my defence I am sleep deprived Grin

IamXXHearMeRoar · 09/06/2018 15:25

I am aware that Brizzie is not in South Africa, just to be clear...

Clarioncall · 09/06/2018 16:00

Actually, when I first saw the watered down descriptions of the situation I thought it was either in Australia or the UK and I was disappointed that this kind of despicable language was still happening.

OP posts:
auntycartmanslargertestacle · 09/06/2018 16:12

IamXXHearMeRoar🍺Great link. Have one on me.

OP posts:
Clarioncall · 09/06/2018 16:38

But then when I learned that it was in South Africa all was made clear.

The beer names are supposed to be gender-neutral, according to that last link.

Yep, because ‘blonde’, ‘brunette’ and ‘redhead’ are common descriptors for men.
My husband’s a blonde. My sister’s married to a tall brunette Hmm

LassWiADelicateAir · 10/06/2018 06:23

The only men I can think of who have regular references made to their being blonde are Boris Johnson and Milo Yiannopoulos. It is always in the context of belittling them and likely to be used in adjectival form. I suppose the tabloid press might have a blonde hunk as the equivalent of a blonde bombshell.

I can't think I've ever heard of a man being described as redheaded , far less a redhead. Men do get described as ginger or even a ginger. For extra put down in Scotland if using it as a noun both gs are pronounced hard.

Men are never brunette or a brunette.

TakeawayTakeMeAway · 10/06/2018 06:49

And even then @lasswiadelicateair, isn’t is usually ‘blond’ for a man?

deydododatdodontdeydo · 10/06/2018 07:06

Meanwhile, in the UK, there is a growing campaign against sexist beer names and pump clips, with CAMRA now stating that beers with sexist pump clips and labels will not be allowed at their beer festivals.
Until recently, a beer called "Top Totty" was served in the House of Commons bar, but MPs banned it.
In the UK beer world, out-dated, sexist pump clips are usually seen as a crusty old real ale thing, whereas craft breweries don't do such things.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 10/06/2018 07:08

Also, blonde is feminine, blond male. It seems it might have been more common to call men blond in the past?
The male form of brunette is brunet, but I don't think I've ever seen it used.
