Has anyone else on here seen this film (its currently showing on Film 4) It involves a transgender character . It was made in 1980 so a while ago. Im not really sure how to describe it. Unfortunately it does contain violence towards women Sad

I guess the reason im posting is............would this film be seen as transphobic or more as a ridiculous stereotype.

Google "dressed to kill transphobic" and you'll find dozens of articles about it being transphobic (along with Silence of the Lambs) and other films with similar portrayals.

These days films get labelled transphobic even before they make it to cinemas (see the recent movie "Split" for example).

Aren't they remaking psycho without the mum's clothes because transphobic? The power they have is unbelievable. Least oppressed people on the planet.

trans privilege

Saw it years ago. IIRC he was a psychopath. Dont think he was transgender as we understand it now. Cant see how it could be seen as transphobic.

I always thought that the character of Norman Bates wore his mother’s clothes because he had a mental disorder, not because he was transgender.

I can’t actually believe I wrote that sentence 🙄

Theinconstantgardener · 28/05/2018 09:00

yes thats right

I think you've neatly encapsulated the problem TRAs have with it, Rhonda.
