Acknowledging the death of a campaigning sportswoman who was an advocate for women's sport and who pioneered the need for safeguarding in sport before it was publicly recognised.

Shamefully the Football Association shut down her research project that identified "the lack of safeguards in place at football clubs, with no requirement to conduct a criminal record check and nothing to stop paedophiles having access to children in changing rooms and showers. Sexual harassment and abuse are to do with the coach being all-powerful,” she warned. “There is also a false belief that someone who is technically competent is morally competent".

She was in a civil partnership with Diana Woodward and her work has had a lasting impact on safeguarding in sport.

Thank you for highlighting Celia’s work - I’d never heard of her.

Me neither.

A nice obituary. RIP Celia and thank you for your important work on children's safeguarding.

Thanks OP, I hadn't heard of her either. It shouldn't but it does still amaze me every time I read about a woman whose work & contributions are so remarkable and yet have been buried/suppressed/erased from the public narrative. So many women unrecognised for the amazing people they are/were.

I'm off to read more. Thanks.

Well that's certainly worked out well for the FA - and the SFA here in Scotland as well with current court cases in both jurisdictions and persistent rumours about Celtic boys club ring.
I bet they wished they'd listened to her now!
