Just noticed the Woman Lawyer of the Year award is open to solicitors who identify as women...

www.lawsociety.org.uk/support-services/events/excellence-awards/categories-and-criteria/#ea24

In 2017, women solicitors represented more than half the profession, however still too few women reach senior level positions. In addition to achieving professional excellence in her field at senior level, we're looking to recognise a woman solicitor who has achieved significant results either in her business or for the benefit of society through her legal skills. This individual will have opened doors historically closed to women and will be inspiring and influencing others to pursue a career in law.

*Open to solicitors who identify as a woman

There was a thread a while back. I don't care as (a) it is England and Wales and (b) I am not interested in "Woman Lawyer of the Year" awards.

There was a thread a while back. People who contacted them got some bla bla about trans women being disadvantaged too. Not saying they might not be. But that's certainly not proven.

They should have Transwoman Lawyer of the Year Award.

But then again what woman worth her sadly accepts a female only category award? It is patronising AF.

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/05/2018 19:58

Men have managed to live with themselves for years excluding women. Or is it only patronising when it's overt?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 21/05/2018 20:07

But then again what woman worth her sadly accepts a female only category award?

All the ones who didn't win Lawyer of the Year because presumably in practice it translates to Male Lawyer of the Year just like all the other awards/jobs/places on boards etc where men are overwhelmingly over represented?

But that's not patronising or unfair, that's just a massive fucking coincidence, right? Hmm

Woman solicitor of the year, open to anyone who identifies as a woman? Is there not enough excellent actual women solicitors to choose from then? Presumably not, as there are so few in senior roles. Honestly…
When will this madness end?

Reminds me of a satirical song on R4 I heard when Caitlyn Jenner was made Woman of the Year:

"Woman of the Year, can't get much finer

Pity out of 3.5 billion in a he world to choose from, they couldn't find one ...

....with a vagina"

PeakPants · 21/05/2018 22:16

I see your concern but I can assure you that all the nominees last year were biological females as I am sure will be the case this year. I don’t think the solicitor profession is overrun with trans people.

This doesn't bother me as much as sports where men and those with a man's physique have an unfair advantage. As long as the competition promotes women in law and raises their profile I can't get upset about this one.... am I missing something?
