Lighthearted (if possible on here?)

Why are you all so annoyed about the word hysterical being used to describe a woman? Even if she IS being hysterical!!? It's a perfectly good word.

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/05/2018 21:34

No it's not. HTH.

Nogodsnomasters · 19/05/2018 21:38

Nope it didn't help, as you didn't answer the question posed. Also you didn't keep it light hearted either so.... Least helpful response possible.

Prestonsflowers · 19/05/2018 21:39

Originally the word meant ‘disorder of the uterus’
The use of the word has changed over the years but when it’s used to describe a woman’s behaviour it is offensive.

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/05/2018 21:39

Yeah, not here to appease you. The origins and usage of the word were explained on the other thread making it very obvious why it's a problematic word.

birdsdestiny · 19/05/2018 21:40

Ordering people to be lighthearted makes people not light hearted.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 19/05/2018 21:41

I'd have no issue with a woman being described as hysterical if her behaviour fitted the modern day definition of hysteria. The meaning of words can change.

Nogodsnomasters · 19/05/2018 21:42

I appreciate the honest response, thank you. I do personally find it a massive overreaction that anyone would find the word offensive in this day and age when that's clearly no longer the meaning behind it. when being used nowadays no one means "this person has been diseased of the uterus for days!" etc.

OP posts:
UpstartCrow · 19/05/2018 21:44

Its rarely used to describe men.

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/05/2018 21:44

Oh I don't find it offensive, I find it a useful indicator of how casually sexist the person using it is.

Nogodsnomasters · 19/05/2018 21:45

@Assassinated - I'm not asking to be appeased, I started a thread and if you didn't like the vibe of it then why respond? You weren't forced to.

OP posts:
ILikeMyChickenFried · 19/05/2018 21:46

Within my circle of friends and family I wouldn't consider someone sexist for using the word, it's applied equally as frequently to men as it is women although rarely to describe true hysteria.

AssassinatedBeauty · 19/05/2018 21:47

Because I wanted to and I can! Doing what the OP instructs is not part of the rules Smile

Nogodsnomasters · 19/05/2018 21:47

@birdsdestiny - can't see anywhere in the slightest that I've ORDERED you into being lighthearted, the subject matter was an indication of MY intention through the post not anyone else's. Though it would be an appreciated response, I in no way demanded it. You all do seem to have a great way of feeling people are "forcing" you to do things, common response on this board.

It's about the historical context Grin

Light hearted enough for you? SmileSmileGrinGrinGrinCakeWineBear

Nogodsnomasters · 19/05/2018 21:49

@Assassinated show me where I've instructed you to do anything? Haven't attempted to instruct you in any manner.

OP posts:
AssassinatedBeauty · 19/05/2018 21:50

Lighten up dude, why are you being so serious!

birdsdestiny · 19/05/2018 21:51

You seem quite demanding though, not at all happy when assasinated didn't follow your instructions.

UpstartCrow · 19/05/2018 21:51

Well you read 'annoyed' into peoples responses to hysterical, and that doesn't match with 'lighthearted'.

Can you rewrite some of the annoyed posts to demonstrate a more suitable tone?

birdsdestiny · 19/05/2018 21:52

ProudThrilledHappy · 19/05/2018 21:53

It suggests a woman is upset because of an imbalance in her uterus, rather than for genuine and reasonable causes.

Its as dismissive as someone saying you must be on your period when you have a perfectly valid grievance and if you were male no-one would dare to suggest they were ‘just hormonal’ because they were obviously displeased.

Also that historically many women were oppressed and abused under the misheld belief they were mentally deranged because of having a uterus

Again @birdsdestiny show me where I've instructed anyone to do/be/say/behave in any way here? I'd love your evidence of this.

OP posts:
AssassinatedBeauty · 19/05/2018 21:57

For a lighthearted thread you're really getting quite annoyed...

Nogodsnomasters · 19/05/2018 21:59

@upstart I read "annoyed" into it because a lady wrote a post and the first few responses to her where totally unrelated to her issue and zoned in on the fact she was going to be roasted for using the word hysterical. So that's the example it was based on, and honestly I was asking lightheartedly because I didn't understand what was so wrong with the word. I use it frequently, particularly for its other version in humour "that dancing ferret is hysterical" but not exclusively.

OP posts:
birdsdestiny · 19/05/2018 21:59

I don't provide evidence on a lighthearted thread. I am just here for the giggles. And because the only other threads are wedding ones.
