Why are you all so annoyed about the word hysterical being used to describe a woman? Even if she IS being hysterical!!? It's a perfectly good word.

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 20/05/2018 23:55

I think one of the OPs was deleted, no idea what it was.

SupermatchGame · 21/05/2018 00:00

Being told that I have lost all perspective by a jokester like you is precisely what I would expect. Hysterical even.

Are you expecting me to respond to that?

thebewilderness · 21/05/2018 00:21

I don't think MNHQ have deleted any of her posts so presumably they do not think she is a troll.
When I reported the targeted abusive language post the mods responded that they were going to have a talk with that person. So I think you right that they do not consider the OP a troll on the other areas of MN.

Nogodsnomasters · 21/05/2018 00:22

I had one post removed on another thread none on this one as far as I know and it was not in relation to anything of a troll nature.

I didn't say genuine mn members couldn't be purposely inflammatory, I was merely responding to troll accusations. Please don't put words in my mouth.

OP posts:
thebewilderness · 21/05/2018 00:22

Calling Datun a psycho, Errol.

LaSqrrl · 21/05/2018 00:36

Mn is weird today. And #iamthegodandmaster isn’t helping.

Must be one of Emma's mates on moderation. It would explain a lot.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/05/2018 00:39

Please don't put words in my mouth.

I wasn't(I think that referred to one of my posts?) I was suggesting that genuine MNers may sometimes start goady threads. Which is what appears to me to have been the case here. And as I'm not sure whether it's ok to say that, I reported my own post.

BertrandRussell · 21/05/2018 05:39

And just in case anyone is interested in an answer to the original question, there are words that are used to diminish and sideline women and their opinions that are never used about men- except occasionally gay men. Hysterical is one of them. Shrill, shrieking and strident are three more. It's dog whistle sexism. Have a look at any thread on here where someone makes even the most mildly feminist objection to something-being called a girl, for example-and I guarantee one of those words will appear on the first page.

I wouldnt have thought you would have reported a potato comment

It seems to be on here that if someone thinks they were insulted (not saying you felt that) that they prefer to let the comment stand

Its other very 'helpful' posters that seem to report (i quite often do...and then see the 'insulted' poster requesting that this post stands and is not reported and im all 'oops Blush... wouldn't report potato though)

ErrolTheDragon · 21/05/2018 08:23

I suppose it would add a lot of work for the mods and slow the process down if they checked with the target of a PA post if they wanted it deleting or not.

BertrandRussell · 21/05/2018 08:24

I've said before, I think the only person who should be allowed to report a personal attack is the person who feels attacked.

LangCleg · 21/05/2018 09:00

Wait, what? MNHQ don't regard this as a deliberately inflammatory thread?! Hahahahahaha. Have they eyes? OP wanted to start an argument and OP started an argument. Why does it matter if OP doesn't start arguments elsewhere on Mumsnet?

Personally, I quite like a good argument so inflammatory threads don't bother me.

You want to start an argument, OP? Go for it, say I.

You want to pretend OP wasn't a GF thread, MNHQ? You're stretching credulity there my friends, say I.

AngryAttackKittens · 21/05/2018 09:19

May as well have opened with "Greetings, I am a goady fucker. Fight me!"

Honestly is an admirable quality, after all.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/05/2018 09:47

Wait, what? MNHQ don't regard this as a deliberately inflammatory thread?!

I'm not sure they've passed judgement on it yet. If early reports were about PAs and troll hunting they may only have looked at it in those terms.

Choosing a username which is, I believe, an anarchist slogan, is suggestive of a lack of aversion to lobbing a small Molotov cocktail into a crowd.Grin well, maybe sometimes that's not a bad thing on an Internet board, but there should be no surprise if the motivation is questioned.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 21/05/2018 10:06

This thread is really pathetic. Just an FYI, none of your comments are clever or funny.

BertrandRussell · 21/05/2018 10:21

I think my contribution was quite clever, to be honest. And it answered the original question. It wasn't funny, I'll give you that.

LaSqrrl · 21/05/2018 10:31

OMG, we have just been accused of being HUMOURLESS!

We need to start serious discussion about the differences between tubors, corms and rhizomes. Because we have totes never had that 'humourless' accusation thrown at us! Put away your kindling, ChickenFried! Don't burn us, pretty please! GFY

Lighthearted (if possible on here?)
LaSqrrl · 21/05/2018 10:34

Long story short though, it is tone policing. Women are not, by virtue of the gender role assigned us, allowed to be angry, upset, pissy, with trolls, many of whom will be male.

However, living the gender role assigned to me at birth, is actually against my religion. I claim, religious persecution!

BertrandRussell · 21/05/2018 10:36

I am so clever. I have bits of paper that say so......

Juells · 21/05/2018 10:38

Lighthearted (if possible on here?)

Why are you all so annoyed about the word hysterical

I'd consider that pointless and goady.

AngryAttackKittens · 21/05/2018 10:39

I'm mostly annoyed that the OP is so shit at being goady, honestly. At least make an effort!

Juells · 21/05/2018 10:41

😂

Nogodsnomasters · 21/05/2018 11:26

You may find I'm shit at being goady because I was never trying to be, no matter how much you want this to be a goady post it never was and no matter how much you wanted it to be a man or a troll it was neither of those either. Sorry that doesn't comply with your wishes. At the beginning I genuinely did not know why the word was offensive to anyone because I didn't know the historical meaning of the word. Once I was informed of the historical meaning my feelings on the matter were that words evolve and if someone is using that word in the current meaning and correct context then it should not be considered offensive, in fact a few people along the way have agreed with that that if it was used to describe anyone male or female who was in fact behaving hysterically then it would be fine. What you all would have preferred is if I'd have been informed of the historical meaning and then conformed to say I'd no longer use this and be submissive and apologise for not knowing.

OP posts:
AngryAttackKittens · 21/05/2018 11:35

I'd prefer paragraph breaks, personally.

BertrandRussell · 21/05/2018 11:59

"What you all would have preferred is if I'd have been informed of the historical meaning and then conformed to say I'd no longer use this and be submissive and apologise for not knowing."

OP- can you think of any examples of where you've heard it being used to describe a man?
