I have read before that part of the reason decriminalisation has been more successful (ie resulted in less trafficking) than in other places was because New Zealand is an island So it's harder to traffic into.

Looks like there just isn't enough supply so now you can use prostitution on your immigration forms.

Bleuch.

Jesus.

That's just about it I think.

If I turn off all forms of communication with the outside world will it all just fuck the fuck off?

Nuffaluff · 14/05/2018 20:26

The comments make for very depressing reading. There is a lot of ignorance out there.

AssassinatedBeauty · 14/05/2018 20:31

The link to the NZ immigration website in that article no longer works, and I can't find any evidence of sex workers/escorts being on the skilled list. Hopefully this means that someone has reconsidered this idea, or, more pessimistically perhaps they've just removed it for now until any fuss dies down.

KennDodd · 14/05/2018 20:33

And how do they assess a woman's skills in this trade? Do 'employers' have to prove that they've tried and failed to recruit locally first. Can unemployed women be forced to take up available work in brothels or face losing unemployment support?

This is a ridiculous I don't believe it's true.

Whattheactualfuckmate · 14/05/2018 20:33

Wtf?

SardineReturns · 14/05/2018 20:35

not on here so hopefully cobblers.

PintOfMineralWater · 14/05/2018 20:36

It's a mistake. It was harvested from another list apparently.

Racecardriver · 14/05/2018 20:37

Since when is pristitution a firm of skilled work? Surely people become sex workers as a result of a lack of any employable skillsets?

QuarksandLeptons · 14/05/2018 20:47

This is so depressing. Poor, vulnerable women fleeing other countries for a better life and this is what New Zealand considers good enough for them.

Also, Guardian dude bro misogynists out in force on the comments section. All earnest about their perceived wokeness. All devoid of any empathy or compassion for women as human beings

QuarksandLeptons · 14/05/2018 20:49

Just seen that they’ve now removed it. Thanks Pint

This is nonsense. The article came out here in NZ and it's pure sensationalism. Sex worker is on the list of potential skilled work. Potential.
You then have to prove that the work is skilled. It's a very very high bar. They were very quick to point out that it would be unlikely that anyone could prove the skilled nature of such a job.
I am going through the application now!! I have 10 years experience in a very nice field and the evidence I have collect is huge. No guarantee they will accept it as a skilled job though.
For context 'kitchen hand' is on the list but if you only have 3 years of pot washing experience it's unlikely to be deemed skilled.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 14/05/2018 22:38

While I would love it if this was bollocks I'm not sure how any of what you've said makes it any better Nakedavenger I don't think the op's point is that 'sex work' is unskilled and therefore shouldn't be on the list Hmm

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/05/2018 03:11

Strippers were supposedly on the Canadian list ten years ago. And it wasn't a list of 'skilled workers' as such, it was jobs that were undersubscribed and foreigners were willing to do. So you could get a work permit if you had a Canadian employer happy to hire you and no Canadian workers wanting it.

If a brothel is an employee in NZ same as any other I can see how this could be the case. And since as far as I know the mega brothels in Germany increased trafficking, I'd imagine NZ would be the same.

the world is going to shit.

Bad enough that it was on a 'potential' list.

And skilled or not skilled is just a red herring.

Prostitution is exploitation and not work.

The NZ Immigration website pulls up all ANZCO occupations - including many non-skilled roles (have had to explain this to confused employees in other sectors). It was misrepresented in the original article but I understand that INZ have now removed the link to ANZCO for this specific occupational group to avoid further confusion/media outcry.
