Is anyone else annoyed with Germaine Greers banishment to the naughty corner? She's a living icon and she's just not appreciated properly. It's a real shame the way she is no-platformed and vilified - just because she says women don't have penis'.

I wanted to share some Germaine Greer links that I love. I'm a massive fan and I'm pretty sure a lot of you guys are as well. If you could share your own links, messages, thoughts that would be awesome.

That is it she didn't get to finish her reply I was really angry then it just descended into chaos after that.I am not sure what the presenter was but she was a total shambles.

spontaneousgiventime · 09/05/2018 13:34

CN may as well have put GG on a chair with a gag over her mouth. She ridiculed her and told lies (GG has not appeared on Victoria Derbyshire, she submitted a statement). It was a total disregard for a feminine academic.

UpstartCrow · 09/05/2018 13:39

If the 'debate' had been genuine, I would have assumed all the participants would have been prepped beforehand. Instead it looked like a set up.

There were several vile comments about age, then a libfem gaily announced that support for the issue was divided into older and younger women.
I don't know who you were, but when GG was your age she was already a published author, and had a better grasp of feminism than you do.

Beamur · 09/05/2018 13:43

There was an ageist slant to quite a lot of the debate. I use the term debate loosely. The host was rude and abrasive to Germaine Greer in a way that none of the other guests were subjected to.

OpalIridescence · 09/05/2018 13:44

Germaine Greer is a force, she is hugely intelligent and will state her opinion without worrying if it's pleasing. Not only is that rare it's also brave in this strange new world of ours.

I saw her last year and was in awe, I am glad we never spoke as I would have turned into the most ridiculous fangirl.

So enraging to see Germaine treated like this, it doesn't really matter if you agree with her or not.

As a PP said she is too straight talking for society now, which tells you what a mess we are in. No wonder she prefers her rainforest these days...

Freespeecher · 09/05/2018 13:44

Neither a woman nor a feminist but I have a lot of time for Greer as she's always got something original to say (rather than merely trotting out the same old lines) and is also happy for others to have their say too.

Total contrast with those (and it's not limited to OJ and TRAs) who simply look to bulldoze the opposition. It can be effective but works against them in the long run as they forget how to debate and argue properly (which, if their causes are as righteous as they say that are, shouldn't be difficult).

An example would be the activist who interrupted a Rees-Mogg talk and then said he "wasn't worth" debating. Had he tried to do so, odds are he'd have lost, as simply shouting slogans wouldn't have cut it.

To get back to GG, I do hope she's not the last of a dying breed. Would be a shame if people were reduced to checking what their ideology/dogma says they should say before answering, rather than giving their own opinion as an individual.

Merrylegs · 09/05/2018 13:45

(I mean, I wish she hadn't done Big Brother and I don't agree with her AT ALL about felling Thetford Forest. But everything else about her is top drawer.)

Greymisty · 09/05/2018 13:47

Loath the so called age divide in feminism. I'm a millenial and women in my age group are being brainwashed in all sorts of crap thats a so called choice and empowering Confused I think as a whole we haven't been round the block enough so should sometimes shut up and listen to GG and co. But nooo we're to busy helping the modern man manage his feelings.

Sorry getting into my rant groove.

Sontaran · 09/05/2018 13:50

Camilla Long had it right on Twitter - "Germaine Greer has spoken for three seconds and is already obviously far too intelligent for this show - again"

2rebecca · 09/05/2018 13:54

Still too angry to go looking for GG quotes, but think she was great on that clip for newsnight where she swore alot. She makes it clear that she has very little interest in m to f transexuals as her interest is in women and misogyny not feminised men who want to be women. Men can wear what they want and have whatever surgery they want as long as they don't then claim to have transformed magically in to women.
I'd love to see more of Germaine and will order her book on the menopause as it's about time I read something more recent from her.

IfNot · 09/05/2018 13:57

I'm astonished at that clip with all the women talking about men and marriage. .I can't imagine anything like that being on telly now! And the smoking! Shock
Loved the one with the back combed hair and red lippy. I just can't imagine a proper intelligent free and unscripted conversation among women being broadcast these days. Happy to be proven wrong though.

DJLippy · 09/05/2018 14:08

I think that explains the backlash somewhat. We definitely wouldn't get away with cackling like a gaggle of witches about the poor backward men folk these days.

It was GG getting a hammering in the media for her 'transphobia' in about 2015 that made me start taking notice of the issue. At first I swallowed the line about bigotry and felt like I'd discovered my idol had feet of clay, but then thought... wait a minute.

She is magnificent. Shame on MB, the soundbite gobshite, implying she wasn't worth arguing with because she's too old to remember what she's said. An utter fucking disgrace.

Alice Thomson writes:
(extract)
"The intensity of the debate around gender now feels seismic. I remember writing about it a few years ago when it hadn’t yet become a divisive issue. A family court judge mentioned that there were an increasing number of cases of teenagers wanting to transition against their parents’ wishes. At the time it seemed like a legal and medical conundrum.

Now it has become a faultline. Feminists debating on Woman’s Hour or Mumsnet seem trans-fixed. When Germaine Greer suggests trans women can’t join the girls’ club, she sounds more like an intolerant, regressive Ukip member than the author of The Female Eunuch. "

loveyouradvice · 09/05/2018 14:18

Just watched Gendequake debate and feel SO angry - yup, Germaine ambushed and mocked for saying she didn't remember being on a show that SHE WASN"T ON.....harassed in really aggressive fashion... instead of just asking - as would have been appropriate in a debate - something like what do you think about ...?

SHE IS AN ICON - and to see Caitlyn Jenner treated with awe and respect and GG attacked was truly terrific - it was meant to be a DEBATE with RESPECT... not a Newsnight Paxman attack.....

GG you are amazing - still totally amazing at 80, and made some really interesting points last night - you have changed so many women's lives... THANK YOU

loveyouradvice · 09/05/2018 14:19

ahem... horrific, not terrific... damn autocorrect....

busyboysmum · 09/05/2018 14:33

Absolutely agree GG is always inspirational and TBH was way above any of that nonsense. I am disgusted about the way she was treated and CJ who has killed someone in a car crash and abandoned their family and is now marrying a 20 year old was revered? Something's rotten in our society.

PositivelyPERF · 09/05/2018 14:36

loveyouradvice, you just know that piece is going to be copy and pasted, don’t you? 😆

averylongtimeasSpartacus · 09/05/2018 18:12

I read the Female Eunuch when I was 15, more than 40 years ago.
My mum recommended it, as did I to my dd.
It made dd and I so cross to see her treatment last night, especially by the presenter and that silly simpering girl, neither of whom are half as intelligent.Angry

FrangipaniBlue · 09/05/2018 18:52

Just putting this out there.....

I HAVE MET GERMAINE GREER!

Very random and very surreal, she was directly behind me in a queue for the ladies toilets in an international airport. I was seriously jet lagged and star struck but we had a good old crack about nothing in particular and I was very dignified and didn't let on that I'd cottoned on who she was......

I kick myself every day that I didn't ask for a bloody selfie Grin

DJLippy · 09/05/2018 19:00

@FrangipaniBlue I am so jealous!
My mum and dad say they saw her a couple of years ago in their car and just sort of let on to each other.
