Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I found unisex and a single sex toilet and guess which sex had to be included in unisex

....it was the gents!

I can’t saw where it is for fear of outing myself (small town), but at least one organisation has its head screwed on. It doesn’t have to be the ladies that lose out ☺️

Yay! Much more sensible.

I had worked out an argument against the men's toilets remaining as such & not becoming 'unisex'. It may have some holes in it, but it's something like:

Q. What's the problem with everyone using the men's?
A. Urinals
Q. Yes, um don't quite get the problem there
A It's not right for others to see men peeing at the urinal
Q. But they see each other
A They're all men, though, so that's ok
B So the problem is penises
A Well, yes.
B But I though GRA theory holds that biology is passé, it's feelings & how we feel ourselves to be, that now matter.
A True ...
Q And that some women have a penis
A Yes ....
Q I've also heard the you can't tell anything about what people feel themselves to be by just looking at them, so you don't know what I am and I could have a penis in my pants. You'd never know! Therefore the men's should be unisex.

Probably won't ever actually get to have this conversation IRL though Sad

I spotted one that way round in Taiwan. Solves the problem nicely in my opinion.
Everyone carries on as normal

There's a beach loo in Cornwall that has 'Ladies' signed one way and 'Men's and All-gender' signed the other way, with Men's down the far end of the All-gender. It means there's somewhere you can take opposite-sex small gritty children, which is a Good Thing. I assume it also means that anyone transgender doesn't need to worry about being seen to go in the 'wrong' door, and that's also a Good Thing.

I don't think either should be changed into unisex. A junisex option should be ADDED wherever possible. But I don't think its fairl to change either of the existing areas.

However, if one must be changed, the mens is the obvious one. Given men aren't (on the whole) going to be attacked by women and men literally do just use their loos to piss and shit, where women use their loos for a variety of reasons.

I assume it also means that anyone transgender doesn't need to worry about being seen to go in the 'wrong' door, and that's also a Good Thing.

However, as we know..its not actually about 'somewhere to piss' for many TRAs. Its about validation. So they would still use the womens.

Lancelottie · 09/05/2018 13:44

I know. And I think we know which subset of transwomen would do that.

dangermouseisace · 09/05/2018 17:32

onthelist the men I know use their loos for more than pissing and shitting. To name a few other activities:

sell drugs
take drugs
have sex
beat up other men for no reason (the men I've known have been the beaten up ones, not the beating up ones)

How strange... I was literally about to post about this.... it seems so obvious that where it isn't possible to have another lot of toilets (and fair enough in smaller places) that it is the Gents that doubles up....

As every woman knows when Architects designed stuff they just assumed more men peeing ops were needed than women (i.e. urinals and bogs always add up to more than the women's options).... so not only is it

  • Safer
  • Easier
  • Less threatening
  • There is also spare capacity!

I was in public toilets recently and a girl was having a problem with her bra, and her friends were giggling round the sinks, unzipping the back of her dress to sort it out.

Another cubicle had a mum going to the loo with her cubicle door open as she had left her sleeping baby in the buggy outside the cubicle and was keeping watch on her.

These are all things that would have to change with gender neutral toilets.
