Transgender campaigners and organisations have released an open letter to Channel 4 criticising Genderquake, a season of programmes touted as an exploration of the gender debate, as "counterproductive".
Signees are particularly concerned about Genderquake: The Debate, a studio discussion hosted by Cathy Newman that promises to look at what gender means in 2018. It will discuss topics including: 'what defines our gender identity', 'how that affects our rights', 'should it be easier to change gender' and 'does gender matter'.

The letter, published by indy100 in full below, argues that the debate will give legitimacy to transphobia, prejudice and the notion that trans identities are up for discussion. This concern is presumably stoked by the presence of Australian-born academic and writer Germaine Greer on the panel, who has previously said transgender women "can't be women". continues...

"The letter is published in full below and has been signed by dozens of prominent transgender and non-binary activists and campaigners - and allies - alike, including Fox Fisher, Owl, Stephanie Hirst, Juno Roche, Travis Alabanza, Kate Llewellyn, Jack Monroe and India Willoughby."

As someone who is just an "ordinary female" (for want of a better description) and woefully ignorant about these issues, who'd tuned in to learn more (a) I learnt nothing and (b) the whole thing seemed to illustrate perfectly how the female agenda is spoken over, hushed, excluded, ordered to go away.

Definitelyrandom · 09/05/2018 00:48

Well, it peak transed DS, yet against. He was appalled by the imbalance - and the usual accusations of transphobia being used to try to stifle debate.

The treatment of Germaine Greer, and bamboozling her over her non-existent appearance on VD means I now have "Badly done" running through my head as an earworm. Hmm

“It was badly done, indeed! You, whom she had known from an infant, whom she had seen grow up from a period when her notice was an honour, to have you now, in thoughtless spirits, and the pride of the moment, laugh at her, humble her–and before her niece, too–and before others, many of whom (certainly some,) would be entirely guided by your treatment of her."

Melamin · 09/05/2018 00:53

That is why we do not want to grow old.

DJLippy · 09/05/2018 00:54

@Saltcrust Welcome to our world. We just want to have a proper talk about these issues that affect our lives but we just get talked over/at/down to...

CoolCarrie · 09/05/2018 00:56

I wonder if this will be repeated at all? Does anyone know? Or is it really not worth wasting time on at all?

spontaneousgiventime · 09/05/2018 01:00

Prick news says Germaine Greer didn't appear on Victoria Derbyshire but gave a statement. Shows the truth of what happened in this so called debate.

HelenaDove · 09/05/2018 01:01

I thought GG made an excellent point about Mrs Browns Boys I CANNOT STAND THAT SHITE. And ive actually heard ppl comparing it to Father Ted.

HelenaDove · 09/05/2018 01:02

Germaine should put in a complaint.

Pratchet · 09/05/2018 01:03

Transactivists let the underdog facade slip just a little too soon. They should have got UK law under their belts first. Trouble is now, when they succeed in hushing us, and dominating the debate, and getting the police to investigate, the UK naturally gravitates to the underdog. It's not them right now. I don't think they can get it back either.

MipMipMip · 09/05/2018 01:05

Where's that from Melemin?

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 09/05/2018 01:07

Just so ineffably depressing when it's facilitated by a woman.

Who professes to be a feminist.

It's been suggested that she was the fall guy, no-one wanted to do it.

She should have refused.

I actually think Krishnan or even Matt would have been better, they wouldn't have fawned and stood down like she did.

Socialisation I know, but we need to make the best of what we've got now, and the right man might do better against these "women".

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 09/05/2018 01:09

Probably be deleted for that ^, don't care.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 09/05/2018 01:20

I really hope you're right Pratchet.

WhereYouLeftIt · 09/05/2018 01:26

MipMipMip, that's from Jane Austen's 'Emma'.

Kind of wish I'd seen this now - my BF, who has been patiently hearing me noising and resiliently not understanding what I'm talking about (not my arguments - the world) texted to say he has got it. was going to bed in despair.

leyat · 09/05/2018 01:36

What could have been spoken about: issues with shared changing rooms, showering rooms, sleeping facilities, including with kids at school trips, guiding, and at school as well, especially how guidelines are affecting/can potentially affect girls. Also, what is a woman? Not touched on except for asking GG re supposed transphobia. Why are transwomen always upfront and centre in trans activism? Also the violent misogyny, for eg why was there widespread approval of a woman being attacked by a trans identified male. Could go on. Such a wasted opportunity.

@Saltcrust really great to hear your take, it's hard to tell when you are so involved int he debate how it would come across to people outside of that generally....

leyat · 09/05/2018 01:37

@mousecar that's great if he finally understands, and great to hear this show did it for him considering how awful it was and how depressing it has been to watch...

mousecar · 09/05/2018 01:50

@leyat it is good - it gave him some context to the things I've been saying I think. He wasn't completely fresh to it - I've been really cross about women not being 'allowed' to speak so he'll have been watching it critically to some extent. Said GG was the only one making any sense.. Might have to catch up with it later.

HelenaDove · 09/05/2018 01:50

I wanted someone to ask Munroe why she thinks women who dont shave their legs are dirty.

BlueKetchup86 · 09/05/2018 02:10

Germaine’s “listening face” cracks me up every time.

busyboysmum · 09/05/2018 07:26

That was terrible. Totally mishandled by Channel 4. And yes no doubt they were hoping for controversy with the audience mix and free bar.

All that showed me was that the women were willing to listen to the men but as soon as the women started talking they got talked over. All I've ever seen in this debate is this happening. IW always does the same.

noeffingidea · 09/05/2018 07:29

HelenaDove I think that was India Willoughby who said that.

QuentinSummers · 09/05/2018 07:29

helena I think that was India Willoughby

QuentinSummers · 09/05/2018 07:31

I thought GG was ace. She tried valiantly to talk about "woman" as a gender, especially older women. I think/hope the way she was treated will have given a lot of viewers pause for thought
