Has anyone else see 'I Feel Pretty'?

I started a conversation in 'Film' but not many responses yet (but thanks to those who did reply). Anyone with a feminist perspective seen it yet?

What did you think? Has anyone seen 'I Feel Pretty' yet and want to give me your feminist perspective on it?

I haven't seen it but saw an advert for it today, I almost want to see it so I can be annoyed at it!

NotTerfNorCis · 05/05/2018 18:47

I just read a review of it on the BBC. They said it was a terrible plot and a wasted opportunity.

ElenOfTheWays · 05/05/2018 19:05

Hadn't heard of this. The premise seems interesting but it looks like it quickly devolves into "lets make fun of the fat girl who doesn't know she's fat" (she's not even all that fat tbh) .
Could be wrong of course.

tierraJ · 05/05/2018 19:39

I saw the film last night & really enjoyed it but... Amy Schumer is actually only a size 14-16 if that, plus she's pretty (not model 'beautiful' but definitely pretty), plus she has gorgeous long blonde hair - so she's hardly the ugly / plain fat woman that her character is supposed to be.

But... she's a good comedian & plays both straight & funny very well; also Michelle Williams was good in it.

Basically I enjoyed the film & would recommend it.

tierraJ · 05/05/2018 19:41

The message of the film is to be confident in yourself as a woman however you look and to appreciate your friends which is s good message in my view.

Scabbersley · 05/05/2018 19:42

It looks bloody awful

@Jeffers3 "I haven't seen it but saw an advert for it today, I almost want to see it so I can be annoyed at it!" Do, please, then we can talk about it!

@NotTerfNorCis "I just read a review of it on the BBC. They said it was a terrible plot and a wasted opportunity." Well, I'm not sure I believe everything I read or see on the BBC. I loved it.

After reading this review nothing could make me want to see it: www.standard.co.uk/go/london/film/i-feel-pretty-review-as-ugly-as-they-come-a3831041.html

Italiangreyhound · 05/05/2018 21:57

@ElenOfTheWays her actual size is only mentioned in the scene in the shop, which is in the trailer, and she does make one reference to it by saying to a very thin woman 'Do you even have all the ribs I have?' but I think that is it.

@tierraJ yes agree, I actually think Amy Schumer is very attractive, but she is average size in this. I think it is a bit of a rift on 'Shallow Hal', although told from the woman's perspective. In fact there was one bit of the film that really reminded me of 'Shallow Hal', but I can't remember what it was! The toilet scene was very funny!

@Scabbersley "It looks bloody awful" it is obviously not everyone's cup of tea.

@bakingdemon Maybe 'MATTHEW NORMAN' takes this kind of film a bit too seriously!

But thanks all for replying because it's the first adult film (and I don't mean Adult) that I have seen in ages. The last film I saw was Peter Rabbit!

My dd18 went to see it. She said it was patronising and unfunny.

Namesallgone18 · 06/05/2018 00:16

I haven't seen it, just the trailer. I think it is an interesting concept. I'm sure self confidence is a big part of what makes someone attractive to others (though there will be a line with arrogance on the other side I suppose). I think a lot of men with a similar level of looks to women are much happier with their appearance (or give it very little thought) and I think women would be happier if we had some of their self esteem.
But unless we all get bumped on the head that's not going to happen!
It seems in the film others dont see her as more attractive due to her confidence though? They think she's deluded?

Italiangreyhound · 06/05/2018 00:40

@Scabbersley it's not very funny but it has some 'slapstick' comedy.

@Namesallgone18 "It seems in the film others dont see her as more attractive due to her confidence though? They think she's deluded?"

Well it is a mix, she meets a new guy and he finds her confidence appealing, actually two guys both do. The friends are not bothered, just that she is ignoring them; and the top models/cycling sports centre people etc are just not convinced. But the people in the bar love her (the bikini contest was the bit of he film I was least happy about!)

"But unless we all get bumped on the head that's not going to happen!" I am working on a theory maybe I can convince myself I am stunning and have that confidence! I was stunning once but I had such low confidence then! So I think confidence is not at all based on looks, it is based on something else but it doesn't need to be a bump on the head!

Maybe that is why I like the movie so much, I love the idea one can control one's thoughts enough to actually love oneself.

The trailers look terrible and it has been getting terrible reviews. Amy Schumer is extremely irritating and not remotely funny.

The concept of acting as if you are pretty when you aren't is however interesting.

The woman my husband was dating when I met him was not pretty. She had a fantastic figure but no one could have looked at her and thought she was pretty or beautiful. She did however have self confidence by the truck load and acted as if she was beautiful. I had admired her confidence for doing that although ultimately he cheated on her and I won.

PerspicaciaTick · 06/05/2018 00:54

ultimately he cheated on her and I won
What did you win?

Italiangreyhound · 06/05/2018 00:57

"The trailers look terrible and it has been getting terrible reviews. Amy Schumer is extremely irritating and not remotely funny."

*I will find someone else who loves this film... will find someone else who loves this film"

clicks heels, "There's no place like Kansas...."

(but to be fair the only person on this thread -aside from me - who has actually seen the film, liked it....)

@LassWiADelicateAir "although ultimately he cheated on her and I won" What did you win?

LassWiADelicateAir · 06/05/2018 00:59

He chose me over her. We have been together for 35 years. I admired her confidence in acting as if she were beautiful; she wasn't.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 06/05/2018 01:02

lass Shock Are you joking?

AssassinatedBeauty · 06/05/2018 01:05

Lass has been drinking I think...

Italiangreyhound · 06/05/2018 01:05

I'm not sure I believe you whether she was beautiful or not, Lass. Maybe that is the issue - what is beauty? How come you get to judge whether she was beautiful or not?

OP posts:
Italiangreyhound · 06/05/2018 01:06

Maybe that is what I like about the film, the bigger picture of what it means to be attractive or to have confidence!

(But as a feminist i totally disagree with all this judging on looks, of course!)

The trailer was enough to put me off, I can’t stick American slapstick comedy.
