Hi there everyone

We agree that this is an important topic, but please do make sure that you are not eliding or conflating TRA tactics and PIE or paedophile apologist tactics, or implying that there is any overlap between the two.

If you want to discuss gender/trans issues, please start another thread to do so - discussing that topic on a thread about paedophilia will have a tendency to conflate them by default.

@AnitaLovesVictor

Which one is #TransAge, Kate?

As said, probably a subject for another thread if you'd like to discuss it.

KateMumsnet · 02/05/2018 17:30

@nauticant

If we were to discuss how in the past PIE adopted LGB campaign tactics in a search for legitimacy would that also be forbidden?

I think PIE's attempt to align themselves with LGB campaigning is generally accepted to be a matter of record, so no. It is definitely not on to say that PIE use tactics that have been used by TRAs and leave the air heavy with implication, though. Many groups share campaign tactics - TRAs for eg share campaign tactics with the LGB movement as was.

@lightthedarkness

It would be constructive to hear some input as to why some organisations are challenging established safeguarding practice (confidentiality, right to consent etc). Surely those wanting to vary thresholds / boundaries about consent, and child safety would want to be very clear what the thinking is behind this? It is the lack of informed debate that fuels suspicion and it does society no good when safeguarding becomes a war zone. Everyone needs to be open and clear about identifying abuse and not fearful of being accused of hate crimes. This is too important to get wrong.

Agree it's worthy of discussion, lightthedarkness, but if done on this thread it's hard to avoid conflation.

Hi all - we're really not trying to shut any discussion of this down: please do feel free to start a thread to talk about how an end of sex-segregated spaces, or a dilution of safeguarding frameworks, could be abused by predators.

However, there is quite a big difference between that and the implication, whether intentional insinuations or not, that because two groups share a campaigns style, they have other things in common.

This thread began with a link to something which analysed very closely the campaigns tactics of paedophiles - and in the context of the thread as a whole it's therefore very difficult to discuss trans issues on this thread without eliding the two in their aims, by proximity.

Even if it were easy to do so, very few posters here have managed to clearly articulate the position that paedophiles/predators will jump on ANY opportunity - and that may include opportunities opened up unintentionally as a consequence of GRA.

We're going have to delete the thread if people can't respect our request above, which would be a bit of an own goal.

It might also be worth reading our post over here about how we approach reports.

KateMumsnet · 03/05/2018 10:03

Hi all - just to repeat: It is absolutely not on to draw an implied connection between PIE and TRA because they share some tactics.
All 'campaigns' look around for tactics that work. They may (or may not) have decided that TRA tactics are effective and adopted them - just as they may have cynically adopted LGBQT tactics. They may equally have adopted New Labour tactics - I don't know. It means nothing beyond the fact that PIE are clever and manipulative.

To keep focusing on TRA, as one of several groups that PIE doubtless are learning from is disingenuous and after a certain point, yes, transphobic. We absolutely wouldn't allow this relentless focus on a connection with LGBQT for eg, and we won't allow this.

As I said up thread, a conversation about whether one unintended consequence of GRA might be to loosen safeguarding frameworks is a different thing. That conversation can certainly take place, as long as it is not implied that trans people are more likely to take advantage of that loophole, once established. It will be a loophole that could in theory be exploited by any predator, so to focus on trans predators is, again, not on.

KateMumsnet · 03/05/2018 10:42

@AnitaLovesVictor

Kate, as I said upthread, that will also be considered transphobic by the twitter activists. Any mention of the GRA being a loophole for predators is howled down.

What will you do when those posts are mass reported via twitter and screenshotted?

As long as the posts stay within the terms that I just outlined, Anita, they'll be within our TGs. Posts that don't will have to be deleted and we'll have to take a view on posters who continue to do so.
