"Alex Stewart, an inmate at HMP Greenock, is currently campaigning for better support for transgender prisoners and is in the process of creating Scotland’s first transgender information booklet for prisoners. Here she shares some of her experiences and some of the work that she is doing.

When Alex was first brought into the prison system she was placed in the male estate:

“(It was) literally hell. Every single day, guys were chanting some form of homophobic or transphobic comments. I didn’t really have a way to keep anything private and it is hard in such a hyper masculine environment. It was hard to really be yourself. I had to kind of put this mask on.”"

Alex was later moved to the female estate, something that she felt really improved her experiences.

I wonder. Is there a charity that supports women prisoners? I suspect that women prisoners are generally less assertive and have no access to legal advice. Is there a way of communicating with them to find out how they feel about this?

Yeah if you murdered someone, I don't really give a shit if you have to put up with transphobic bullying.

Answer: Trans specific prison. Of course no one should be exposed to and expected to live with fear and abuse. This just also includes people born female.

Soon there will be more transgender identified males incarcerated than there are women. Obviously they are entitled to their own estate.

Gosh poor Alex that must be so tough - I'm so pleased that the state is ensuring that his stay in prison is being made as comfortable as possible. God forbid that going to prison would impinge on anyone's privacy or ability to "be themselves". He really should be applauded for doing such amazing work to further the rights of male prisoners that decide they wish to spend their time in the female prison.
And for the avoidance of doubt using "he" is not "literal violence", murdering someone is however "real violence" and deserves to be punished by imprisonment with all the inconveniences that entails.

I know lots of men who would find being in a "hyper masculine environment" really difficult, including gay men who would (presumably but unfortunately) be subject to homophobic bullying. It's good to know that should any of them ever find themselves incarcerated they will be able to move into the women's estate because that is nicer for them
