“I’m not an easy man” Netflix

Or «Je suis pas un homme facile» originally.

Fun feminist French film on Netflix where the womanising protagonist wakes up in an alternate world where men are constantly objectified and women hold all the power.

It’s a bit like What Women Want but so much better. Plus it has some cool Parisian chic going on (not the point I know Blush) and an amazing ending.

Has anyone seen it? And if not can you please hurry up watch it then come back and discuss it with me? Grin

This was a fun film. I agree, Alexandra looked totally fabulous. I love the way that she positioned herself as an ethical heroine by not "taking advantage" of drunk men, and announcing it as a very admirable Woman of Principle. With no regard to the millions of ways she takes advantage of men all the time, and her entire position was propped up by men.

However. As a short, curvy woman, I still felt alienated by her beautiful lean height being such an important part of her grandeur. To our eyes it would perhaps be impossible to make a film that glamorises more common womanly physiques. The busty, curvy, cuddly woman can be sexualised but not respected. I would have loved to see those shapes somehow accentuated and ruling the world, instead of a woman whose height competes with the height of men being at the top of the hierarchy

The women looking like models is a missed opportunity. Much better to have them presented as men do, can't write any descriptive words as don't want to offend!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/04/2018 18:03

I think her physique and looks were broadly supposed to be the equivalent of his. In his world he was unusually good looking which is why he could flirt with anyone and have sex with loads of women, and Alexandra was pretty much the same in her world.

I did think that the film made a very good point about physical strength being the most important factor in which sex was dominant. They obviously didn't have the special effects budget to change the proportions of the main characters but they showed almost all the couples with the man being shorter, Alexandra comments on how unusually tall Damian is, and when they were discussing pre-historic mankind Alexandra says that women were always the stronger ones physically.

I did love his landing strip chest and laughed a little every time his bare chest was on screen. As I was watching it I wondered if he was genuinely being waxed while being filmed.

I could see why she fell for him, but I didn't think that enough reason given for him to fall for her. They sort of covered it in the bit where they went away and watched racing and had lots of sex, it hinted that his perfect woman had always been a man's personality in a woman's body, but tbh she was a bit of a shit and I think a man who had been brought up in a male-dominant world wouldn't have stuck with her for that long.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 29/04/2018 18:49

Yeah I think part of the reason he wanted her was because she'd said no to her in the first world and being the type of guy he was he liked the chase.

I was kind of Confused as to whether Alexandra knew of the other world. In the initial meeting scene when he was being all slimey/flirty and said " when will we see each other again?!" she gave an enigmatic look and responded "in another life".

So I thought she perhaps knew of the other world and could choose individual sexist men and plonk them in an opposite world for a bit of "re-education". That would be a lovely superpower to have Grin

What was the significance of the obsessive teeth brushing? It had resolved itself in his last session with the counsellor.

Just watching - I noticed (disappointedly) that unlike the comedy flash of hairy boss ankle, that Alexandra seemed to remove all of her body hair.

I guess a hairy heroine not played for laughs was just a step too far

QuentinSummers · 29/04/2018 21:53

I thought she had hairy pits in the shower. Maybe I am misremembering

boatyardblues · 29/04/2018 22:39

She had hairy pits, but super smooth legs. Cannot comment on her bikini line, as she had baggy grey boxers in the sex scenes. Grin

I watched this last night. I loved how detailed it was. At the party the editor introduced a woman by her name and introduced her partner simply as "her husband" there was no attempt to give him a separate identity. Also the scene where Lolo was watching rugby on the sofa with her daughter and it was evident the child was being socialised into her privileged behaviour.

Yes I remember when I was a kid watching my dad and bro watching sports on TV thinking how nice it would be if people would gather round to watch women excel at something.

The problem is men will always have the upper hand because of physical strength. I can’t imagine a world where women are considered superior because of their physical ability to give birth.

Thank you for the recommendation- I watched it yesterday and really enjoyed it. The attention to detail was excellent and the imagery at the end was striking after spending the duration of the film in to Alex’s world.
It seemed that she, like Damien, took it too far and was then sent to his world as a punishment/ reminder of her privilege. Oh to know where that portal is!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/04/2018 12:27

I watched it yesterday I really enjoyed it thank for the recommendation

It was the little details that really made the film rather than the interaction between the two main characters

The sex scene was very amusing and well I could relate to that

glitterbiscuits · 30/04/2018 12:38

My DS is doing A level French. Should I suggest it to him? Just saw sex scene mentioned-so I’m wondering.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 30/04/2018 17:32

Glitter, the sex isn’t very graphic. IIRC. Your son might feel uncomfortable about other scenes but the sex was quite mild.
