I really enjoy the first half of that film

Really hate the 2nd half

I dont think its from a feministy point in my case...its just boring

Was it on normal telly?

Thanksforthatamazingpost · 27/04/2018 22:10

Yep, normal telly.which means it’ll be on again (don’t know why it is but everything seems to be shown in batches on several channels)

But casting my mind back i would agree that it holds up well

I am rewatching one of my favourite shows called Supernatural, only on series 1

But the last time i watched it i cant have been on here much

The episode mentions a boy/man being beaten by his uncle and father...broken bones the lot

A character says about the stepmother ' she was worse because she did nothing to help'

Seriously...her not doing anything was worse than a grown man breaking a childs arm? Hmm alrighty!!

I think Private Benjamin is a very feminist film. Main characters good and bad mostly female, lots of female bonding, female empowerment, Sally learns to stand on her own two feet and makes choices for herself. Fabulous.

Funny movie - underrated.

I'm in the middle of a Supernatural re-watch (I'm up to series 10).

It does improve - the first few seasons, Dean is very misogynistic, but they get themselves some female characters, they explore a lot of stuff - it's still not some feminist ideal, but I'm not yelling at the screen like I was on the first couple of seasons of rewatch.

Where are you all watching Supernatural? I’ve been looking for it for a while!

Love Private Benjamin.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 28/04/2018 09:42

I very rarely yell at Dean

And I can't bloody stand Jo

Although the think im not enjoying is the age gap

When i started watching it there was about a 10 year gap...not the end of the world ...I'm obviously into younger men

Now im rewatching it (i rewatch every few years....I usually only get as far as series 6) its about 20 years!!! It feels wrong a 48 year old women fancying a man that young!!!

token

I have a lot of the dvds, i cant see it on telly or netflix i dont know about amazon prime

Glad to know it stands up to the passage of time. I remember seeing it in the cinema when I was a teen and finding it hilarious. Though my recollection is very much that the first half is extremely funny then the second half is a cop-out in terms of her being true to the arsey, independent character she'd been up till then. I think Goldie Hawn is much under rated. She always seemed to be written off as a blonde airhead playing blonde airheads whereas actually her comic timing was superb and there was always an undercurrent which left you able to see what she was really doing was subverting the stereotype.

2nd half was great!
If 2nd half had a title it would be “Is coercive control a price worth paying for great sex?”

In fact I would say 2nd half is very mumsnet :)
