Barber's sentence

I can't link, unfortunately.

A barber has been given 8 months for giving a 10 yr old a buzz cut to teach him a lesson for cutting his own hair. He also made the boy sweep up the trimmings.

Does that seem proportionate?

Sounds fair. In my view, that’s an abusive, demeaning punishment - well outside the bounds of normal chastisement.

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/04/19/barber-gave-boy-humiliating-haircut-sent-jail/ Here's a link.

If the child suffered physical as well as psychological harm, then that needs to be punished. 8 months in jail does seem to fit - although I do question why this first offender has been given a custodial sentence when I know of cases where paedophile sex offenders have been given community payback orders.

TL;DR - we don't know the ins and outs of the case, so it's impossible to say really and we either err on the side of trusting the judgement of the judge, or thinking there's a miscarriage of justice being carried out.

Yet in another thread where an abusive boyfriend mentally tortured his girlfriend to the point of suicide, he only got a 12 month suspended sentance.

Exactly!

Some horrific behaviour by serial offenders gets suspended sentence or similar, and this gets 8 months! Yes, what he did was awful, but still.
