Follow on thread regarding the data breach situation:
___

Dear MNHQ

I'm very grateful for the commitment to free speech you've publicly taken, and for Justine's courage this week.

A former disgruntled employee of MN is writing on Twitter about the 'transphobia' of MN staff, and calling you TERFs. She is showing a great deal of bias and intolerance towards women with feminist views, this may well be her honest opinion, which is no big deal I suppose, since she is no longer an employee.

At least, it isn't an issue until she calls a shout out to her
'friends who still work at MN' to report and take down posts by 'transphobic scum', by which she appears to be referring to any poster objecting to being called TERF by her friend.

Regardless of the personal views of the MNHQ staff, who should be as free to hold their own views as I am mine, I am disturbed that there may be a small contingent of employees who are invested in unfair moderation and will not be applying fair-handed principles, at least if the claims of this ex-employee are credible.

Can you please give posters some reassurance that the difficult job of fair-handed moderation isn't being abused by the 'friends' of ex-employees who are 'reporting it all' and taking down posts because any gender criticism means the poster is 'transphobic scum'?

Thank you.

Bumble I don't doubt you in the slightest. I think its important that everyone here gets it too and your credibility is backed up. It seems you volunteering that is not sufficiently going in Justine's ears.

Yet.

Bumble KNOWS she’s spot on.

Bumble is spot on.

I'm frankly astounded that the discussion is not "how can MN process SPD in a way which is practical consistent with what they do?", but "do MN process SPD?" The answer to the latter is so self-evidently "yes" that it is beyond belief that it's even on the table.

I can't see why MN can't draw up a sensible ISMS - formally with 27001 or informally with the help of some sensible people - which allows them to appropriately control the risks of dealing with SPD. But if they're in denial about handling SPD in the first place, then the education task is just vast.

@Bumblefuddle can we report an organisation if it becomes highly likely they're flouting the rules?

Battleax · 19/04/2018 15:54

There’s really quite a lot of MNer expertise on this thread now.

For me, two ways of seeing the young woman:

  1. Not very bright, attracted to her ‘cause’, impulsive but didn’t mean any real harm.
  2. A pawn, used by more powerful people to infiltrate and destroy a very female platform.

If 1., why was she not eliminated at interview?
If 2., expect others elsewhere, smiling sweetly while their overlords gather information they can’t access as men.

Keep looking. Where will be next?

Ihavenofuckstogive · 19/04/2018 15:55

I don't understand why the IOC would say a call to the Police is discretionary if that wasn't the case?

(Hit send too soon.)
You’re not alone on clearly knowing your onions and nevertheless not getting a response Bumble.

The hopeful interpretation is that Justine is busy frantically getting advice.

RedToothBrush · 19/04/2018 15:57

If I owned Mumsnet ......

I would have a stiff drink tonight

Justine should be going out and getting shitfaced tonight on the basis of what i'm seeing here.

OrchidInTheSun · 19/04/2018 15:57

I'm so sorry this has all turned to shit. But I don't believe Emma for a nano-second. She was hugely getting off on the power she had to doxx TERFs during her internship and has already proved she's stupid enough to be used as a mule to do that publicly.

I very much hope the police are round her house right now, seizing all her equipment.

Let's hope mummy and daddy can afford a good lawyer.

BeUpStanding · 19/04/2018 15:59

Wow...I totally underestimated how serious this is.

Beyond11cisRetinol · 19/04/2018 16:00

Even the criminal one can be highlighted - posie was on here talking about her experience with mermaids and WYP. Obviously everyone knows who she is anyway, but it could easily have been someone else, and if she had been charged...

Fintress · 19/04/2018 16:00

I'm not sure if this has been said before but my thoughts are she had an agenda when she secured an internship at MN. Whatever the outcome of this debacle and the repercussions she faces, she brought them upon herself. She deserves more than a slap on the wrist.

Battleax · 19/04/2018 16:02

Let's hope mummy and daddy can afford a good lawyer.

No don’t do that. She’s an adult, well into her twenties.

If you unfamiliar and and condescend, you’re letting her off the hook, and insulting other twenty somethings.

Battleax · 19/04/2018 16:02

INFNTALISE and condescend^

spontaneousgiventime · 19/04/2018 16:03

I did a NC a while ago to post a personal story. I've asked MNHQ to delete, it's still there. Due to all of this data breach I'm feeling rather vulnerable as it is personal and about one of my DC. I only ever posted on that thread in the NC as it was created for that purpose. I feel uneasy beyond words right now. Surely it's not too hard to ask MN to hear us out and understand our fears?

I fully understand they are likely to be running round like headless chickens at the moment but a mod has posted a thank you user post quite a while after I asked for my post to be deleted.

LangCleg · 19/04/2018 16:05

Justine, this is the reaction of one of Emma's transactivist friends to Julie's criminal data breech:

If moderators aren't allowed to moderate the extremes of their behaviour maybe a lack of anonymity will.

If not a threat in itself, it's an incitement to others.

Emma. Put. Women. At. Risk.

She did it on purpose and with premeditation. Please, please, please, take this on board.

RedToothBrush · 19/04/2018 16:05

DH was saying last night that the crimes he thinks are on display here carry up to 2 years jail.

I doubted what he said and he just looked at me saying that's potentially how serious it is.

Weezol · 19/04/2018 16:08

I worked in a small retail/online business that had three office staff. It had better provision for customer data and security than is the case here, and was not turning a profit of millions of pounds from that data.

I have nowhere near the expertise and knowledge of many posters on this thread and I am stunned at how badly @MNHQ are handling this.

I never, ever thought I would use the following phrase to anyone, but I think it is appropriate here:

MNHQ - Check your privilege.
