Follow on thread regarding the data breach situation:
___

Dear MNHQ

I'm very grateful for the commitment to free speech you've publicly taken, and for Justine's courage this week.

A former disgruntled employee of MN is writing on Twitter about the 'transphobia' of MN staff, and calling you TERFs. She is showing a great deal of bias and intolerance towards women with feminist views, this may well be her honest opinion, which is no big deal I suppose, since she is no longer an employee.

At least, it isn't an issue until she calls a shout out to her
'friends who still work at MN' to report and take down posts by 'transphobic scum', by which she appears to be referring to any poster objecting to being called TERF by her friend.

Regardless of the personal views of the MNHQ staff, who should be as free to hold their own views as I am mine, I am disturbed that there may be a small contingent of employees who are invested in unfair moderation and will not be applying fair-handed principles, at least if the claims of this ex-employee are credible.

Can you please give posters some reassurance that the difficult job of fair-handed moderation isn't being abused by the 'friends' of ex-employees who are 'reporting it all' and taking down posts because any gender criticism means the poster is 'transphobic scum'?

Thank you.

Justine's first post said that they would be reporting it to the police.

Yspadadden · 19/04/2018 13:36

"... any users who have felt hurt, attacked, or vulnerable ..." felt? No, she does not get that she did something wrong and harmful. I can't abide apologies that sneak in an attempt to minimize what they're supposedly apologising for.

JessicaJonesJacket · 19/04/2018 13:38

The non-apology is irrelevant. It won't undo the impact on her 'professional' reputation. It doesn't contain the problem and I doubt it will have any bearing on the IOC or the police.

I’m beginning to feel a little sorry for Emma.

She has spent £9k a year on a university education that hasn’t appeared to teach her anything about critical thinking or consequences of actions.

She spent 6 months or so working at Mumsnet and learnt nothing about empathy and in that time, whilst furious about transphobia, used the most banal of cases in her rant.

She just doesn’t seem to be very good at much except being a handmaiden to the TRAs who are as likely to now drop her for her fauxpology.

Sad times for Emma.

JessicaJonesJacket · 19/04/2018 13:42

Bumble I imagine they are publishing the apology because, on the thread last night, people asked about an apology. Admittedly they asked for a public apology in all the places where the information had been shared . . .

would report.
So we don’t know if it has Been reported then.
Even if they do report, the tone so far suggests they don’t intend to press charges (Is it up to them to do so? Or is it the state? Not too sure on the ins and out of DPA)

RosenbergW · 19/04/2018 13:44

"I am so sorry - I do still really admire Mumsnet as a women’s organisation and a community despite what I did. "

Fixed that.

Terfragette69 · 19/04/2018 13:45

Surely if any of our data ends up in 'the wrong hands', we can sue? Emma, I sincerely hope you haven't done that because putting people at risk from tra's is just so bloody serious. I am a single parent, this is just wrong on every level possible.

RosenbergW · 19/04/2018 13:46

Exactly.

Battleax · 19/04/2018 13:46

I'm intrigued as to the level of cognitive dissonance needed to simulataneously "really admire" an organisation and have "no loyalty" to them because "they're...scum".

Impressive, isn’t it? 🙄

She’s a disingenuous, insincere little toad. Why she thinks underlining those weaselling qualities will help her now, is a mystery.

AsAProfessionalPenis · 19/04/2018 13:46

I would love Emma to come on here and educate me about what rights the LGBTQI community don't have
She should work with some genuinely under privileged people
I hope you look back in the future and are embarrassed.
Happy to reduce womens rights though.

Battleax · 19/04/2018 13:49

Well she identified as “genderqueer” herself, rather than as an ally. So presumably on her head she’s not just being right on. It’s all bound up with her unique sense of self. Or something.

Springnowplease · 19/04/2018 13:50

Apology? Meh.

SophoclesTheFox · 19/04/2018 13:53

Genderqueer: Blue hair and some piercings that your nan wouldn't like.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 19/04/2018 13:53

I make up a lawyer wrote that not-apology.

I also imagine she won't be prosecuted as prosecution needs victim(s). The victim at present is only MN as they made the complaint to the police. They won't want a prosecution I imagine. So unless others directly affected complain to the police as well - I doubt they will take it any further.

IANAL

Devilishpyjamas · 19/04/2018 13:55

I’d like to also apologise to any users who have felt hurt, attacked, or vulnerable due to my actions

Emma you need to remove the word ‘felt’ - unfortunately your misguided actions may have put women at risk. You have made those women vulnerable.

ArcheryAnnie · 19/04/2018 13:56

I would be interested to know if, as part of her "apology". Emma has come clean with MNHQ about who her alleged "friends" are who are still in the organisation, and what their attitudes are to doxxing and data-stealing.

AsAProfessionalPenis can we not, please? Part of the whole point about TRA-ism is that it is throwing lesbians under the bus. Lesbians are absolutely discriminated against, and getting moreso and not less.

mirialis · 19/04/2018 13:58

Yesterday people were saying that she needed to post an apology on here and now she has she's being ripped to shreds for it.

Justine has said they will be reporting to the police and either way this is "on her record" now. She's massively cocked up but I for one am prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt and accept that there was a genuine feeling of "the only thing necessary for evil to triumph"/ SJW "conscience" feeling coupled with, yes, self-aggrandising/attention-seeking on twitter and that she genuinely didn't intend to provide a means for TRAs to out and hound individuals.

She no doubt has Owen Jones as one of her role models. I know others feel differently but frankly I was probably that sort of idiot when I was her age.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/04/2018 13:59

Tell them it's Bumble.

BarrackerBarmer · 19/04/2018 13:59

aaargh! What are you doing MNHQ?!

When I once had to walk someone out of the building after they were fired for gross misconduct, I didn't take a written non-apology from them the next day and pin it up on a company noticeboard!

You REALLY need to address

  1. The vulnerability that allows rogue admins to screengrab
  2. The vulnerability that allows admins a level of user data access that ISN'T Necessary for their role
  3. The vulnerability that allows rogue admins to transfer data from a mumsnet system to a private one
  4. The vulnerability that allows admins to be unaware of data security to the extent that they publicise that they have been a party to 1,2 and 3.
  5. The vulnerability that the rogue admin has told you about: she has sympathetic friends in role, in HQ, now.

Some companies hire hackers to show them where the vulnerabilities lie in their systems so that they can increase security. You have learned about your own system vulnerabilities via this particular omnishambles, for free, and so have users, and the press.

Now that the whole world is aware of the vulnerabilities in MN you need to eliminate these vulnerabilities, fast.
