I'm too tired to comment sensibly.

I'd like to remind everyone re: no personal attacks and use of preferred pronouns (or avoidance thereof) when discussing a named individual please.

What makes a woman: documentary by Munroe Bergdorf

LOL no, born in the 70s. When did the return to archaic gender roles for children happen, exactly? A forum full of mothers would seem to be the ideal place to establish a timeline.

Natsku · 18/04/2018 08:17

Outspoken in her views about transgender rights, Munroe will also be challenged by those with opposing thoughts and opinions on what is a fiercely debated issue

This could actually be interesting. Probably not, but it has the potential there.

iamawoman · 18/04/2018 08:20

Well this could be interesting as whenever we ask the likes of mb to define woman they cant do it

QueenLaBeefah · 18/04/2018 08:21

How on earth can it be described as fiercely debated? When women are scared of losing their jobs for not being positively TRA in their views?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/04/2018 08:23

That’s what I wondered, QueenLaBeefa.

It was seen a news worth commenting when Justine said she was happy for Mumsnet to be a place for debate. Now it turns out it wasn’t?

merrymouse · 18/04/2018 08:25

suburban, I think being able to buy toys for children and ready made clothes for anyone is a fairly recent thing - never mind the colour!

Until very recently children were just put to work, and the reality was that without birth control and in a world dependent on hard, manual labour, a girl’s role in life was set, whether she liked it or not.

Yes, I agree, the idea of being team pink or team blue is very 00’s.

Sarkyharky · 18/04/2018 08:29

There is no way it will be fiercely debated

Or they will have Munroe looking like a supermodel and a critical feminist with no make up and the twittersphere and the young women will swoon over Monroe and sneer at the nasty feminist.

MargeH · 18/04/2018 08:30

ellenripleysalienbaby

Someone's already thought of that

www.martina-big.com/

All in the name of chasing 'celebrity' status, I guess

CapnHaddock · 18/04/2018 08:31

They always say it isn't about passing but it is always about passing. And FYI Munroe - black women have pink vaginas.

merrymouse · 18/04/2018 08:32

The twittersphere and the young women will swoon

Whatevs - I understand that Mumsnet is now more influential than twitter. Grin

Freshlylaidterf · 18/04/2018 08:55

I can hardly wait !

whoputthecatout · 18/04/2018 08:57

Surely everyone knows what makes a woman? It's a pretty dress, high heels, fluttery eyelashes and lots and lots of fluff and glittery stuff. Oh and a pink brain.

Perhaps Bergdorf will finally answer the question FWR have been asking "what is a woman"? The world is agog and will be hanging on your every word Bergdorf. Or not....

RosenbergW · 18/04/2018 08:58

How well received do you think a similar documentary called What Makes A Man would be?

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 18/04/2018 09:01

Well the way this 'season' is described on the linked page is already annoying - instead of 'is gender in the brain or the body' and 'it used to be simple: you were born in one gender or another', they should be asking 'how is gender connected to sex, if at all?'. There is no mention of the word 'sex' - 'gender' has completely taken over.

I will certainly watch this, and expect and hope that it will make people think.

AngryAttackKittens · 18/04/2018 09:01

I was about to say not at all, but then it struck me that in fact men seem to love that kind of shit, accusing each other of not being manly enough, boasting about how they're Real Men and other men aren't calling other men "soy boys", etc.

So really this is a male trait that's taught via male socialization that's being imported into the idea of womanhood. Toxic masculinity, the TIM version.

Freshlylaidterf · 18/04/2018 09:01

ch4 blurb says two part factual..

Highly doubt there will be many facts about biology..

AngryAttackKittens · 18/04/2018 09:03

Initially read that as "part factual" as in and also part fiction. Which will presumably turn out to be the correct reading though not the one intended.

SeekEveryEveryKnownHidingPlace · 18/04/2018 09:04

I think they mean 'factual' in the sense that it's a fact that Munroe wanted to be a woman, Munroe had certain procedures done, etc.

LangCleg · 18/04/2018 09:10

So much I'd like to say but perhaps had better not. Unable to be temperate on this one, I'm afraid. I find the whole premise deeply, deeply, gut-wrenchingly offensive.

BarrackerBarmer · 18/04/2018 09:11

Two X chromosomes and a bit of time make a woman.
Or, to be more precise: No Y chromosome, ever.

There. I've saved some production costs.

I wish instead they would ask, what do half the world have in common, and how are they distinct from the other half?

Apparently that's too edgy.

So I'll be anticipating #HeelzAndFeelz

Ohforfoxsakereturns · 18/04/2018 09:12

Anyone asked a woman who is biologically a woman for some decades what makes a woman?

No, thought not.

🤦🏻‍♀️

MipMipMip · 18/04/2018 09:12

Anyone else notice that all the people featured (apart undoubtedly from nasty TERFs not in the publicity pictures) are slim and good looking? Because, as I've recentĺy read on a blog, no one wants to be an ugly woman.

BarrackerBarmer · 18/04/2018 09:12

"Antidote productions"

Antidote to biology? Truth? Facts? Or feminism?

Tune in and see

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/04/2018 09:13

I would be interested to see what the procedures were.

The blurb mentioned facial feminisation but not much else, but I suppose we’ll watch and see.

It might be a pleasant surprise and I’m hoping it will be.

MissPiggysKarateChop · 18/04/2018 09:15

What makes a woman?

So far this morning it is 2 double espressos and being sick of 'all this shit' imposed on women.

I have read; this thread, the article on the ex policeman's brothel, about organised gang rapes of an 8 year old Muslim girl in India (as a result of Hindu nationalism - not sure what the 8 year old had to do with it but hey, useful pawn in their politics amirite?) including a retired government official and 2 police officers(!) - presumably those 'generally good morally' types like the one running the brothel and some general articles on Trump's monumental childish stupidity.

So I'd say this morning what makes a women is frustration, anger and black coffee.

I'm so tired of it all.

If there is indeed 'fierce debate' which isn't ridiculously skewed in this programme I will fall off my chair in shock. I sincerely don't think it will happen though. The rest may be interesting ... I guess ...
